French Botanical Field Trip
I finished my mom’s French Botanical Quilt last week and decided to take it with me on a little field trip this past weekend. We went to northwestern Michigan where my husbands family has a home. It is absolutely beautiful up there.
and just taking in the amazing fall colors.

It was my longest trip away from my kids (2 nights), which I guess is kind of sad when you think about it considering my daughter is 4! And although I was in desperate need of a mommy break, I was really itching to get home to them by Sunday and felt a lot of relief when we pulled into the driveway. We are lucky to have the grandparents only a couple of miles away to watch them.
But back to the quilt! As I mentioned before, this decorative quilt is for my mom’s birthday. The focal point in the center of each square is a french botanical print from Japan. My mom is a quilter and has a lot of quilts. I wanted to make her something that was my style – to make it a more personal gift from me. And also I wanted to make her something that she wouldn’t necessarily just make herself. I chose several prints from my stash that coordinated, but were not part of a single collection. I think that makes the quilt more unique.
The back is Kona Snow with a strip of the french botanical print framed by prints used in the front. The binding is Kona Espresso or Chocolate…I wish I marked these when I bought them! It measures about 38″ square and is quilted free motion.
The quilt will be off to my mom later today along with a few other goodies. I hope you like it mom!

That quilt is really beautiful. The combination of fabrics is perfect. I’m sure she will love it!!
Beautiful pictures and beautiful quilt!
Beautiful quilt! Haha! I can totally relate to itching to get away and being so relieved to back home again to the kids. I’ve only been away 2 nights max from my oldest – and that was just while I was in the hospital having #2!
Ha! When I first looked at the first picture I was wondering why your, I’m assuming, husband’s hand looked a little weird…but it’s his golfing glove! I should have just read the whole post, that would have saved me from staring at the picture to figure it out! I love the quilt and love the fall colours! I’m in place where fall colours consist of brown and yellow, but was born in Holland where fall colours are beautifully vibrant. I miss it…though at least here in Alberta we get the sun almost all the time!
LOL that is so funny because he said “my golf glove is on still” and I said “oh, no one will notice!” LOL
I love the color combination of your quilt. It’s something most people wouldn’t immediately think of, but it’s so gorgeous. The photos really turned out nice in front of the birch trees.
I love that you took your quilt on a field trip for photos. I did that with my last quilt and it was SO much fun! I’m sure your mom will love this!
This is stunning–I love those colors!!
Beautiful! Just found your blog! My husband’s from Chicago, and we just moved to Oregon after living 3+ years in Norther Michigan. I really miss the fall there!!! You really captured N.MI well with those photos (gold course included

Thank you so much for such a beautiful quilt Faith! I love the fabric and design and all the love sewn into each stitch! Your work is perfect.
If I haven’t already, I’d like to invite you to a link-up event at my place on November 5th and 6th called, The Airing of the Quilts. I’d be pleased if you could join us, and hope you’ll hop over to my blog and grab the party button so you can help me spread the word.
Is that Cherry Street Market? I was up north last month, but didn’t get there. Love your pictures!
I think it’s called the Market Basket – it’s in Beulah, MI by Crystal Lake.
