Modern Solids by Denyse Schmidt ~ And a Giveaway for You!

Modern Solids by Denyse Schmidt for Free Spirit Fabrics : Fresh Lemons Quilts

A few weeks ago, I received an email from Free Spirit Fabrics asking if I was interested in participating in a fun contest with a few other bloggers. We would all receive a fat quarter box of Modern Solids by Denyse Schmidt, design and make a 60″ x 60″ square quilt using the fabric. The design was to be influenced by a traditional pattern/block/concept. Well, if you are a regular here in this space, it’s probably not news that I love Free Spirit Designer Solids…and I love Denyse Schmidt…and I LOVE modern traditionalism! What a dream come true!

Modern Solids by Denyse Schmidt for Free Spirit Fabrics : Fresh Lemons Quilts

The fabric arrived about a week ago. My breath actually caught when I opened the box and saw it. It is really a stunning collection of colors. I honestly think this would (A) be an *awesome* gift for any quilter **hint, hint** time to send links to loved ones! And (B) be a perfect way to start a collection of solids for those that have none and don’t know where to start.

Over the next 6 weeks I’ll be posting some updates on my quilt progress here on the blog. You can also follow on Instagram by searching the hashtag #modernsolidschallenge. At the end of September, the quilt bloggers participating will have their big reveal and then you guys can vote on your favorite.

You can find these Modern Solids by Denyse Schmidt boxes at a few of my sponsors:

Pink Chalk Fabrics
The Intrepid Thread
Fat Quarter Shop – (looks like they are currently Sold Out)

And now for the giveaway! The Modern Solids were not the only goodie in the box from Free Spirit. They also included this Hadley by Denyse Schmidt fat quarter bundle! This fabric was just released and is only now arriving in shops.

Hadley by Denyse Schmidt for Free Spirit Fabrics : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Just leave a comment for a chance to win. I’d love to hear what you’d do with the fabric if it ends up in your home. I’ll pick a winner Friday, August 15th.

+++ Closing comments to pick a winner! +++

The winner is…

#364: Peggy Gibbs – “I’d use the fabric to make gifts for my charity group, World of Charity Stitching. Thanks.”

Awesome Peggy! I’m sure your quilts will be much loved. I will be emailing you for your mailing address. Thanks everyone for visiting and commenting!

I like to make quilts or sleeping bags for the homeless but maybe not with this fabric! Not that they wouldn’t like it but I would have to find sturdy backing to make it somewhat durable. I have a moratorium on new fabric purchases and have nothing suitable. So I think I would make a baby quilt to have on hand for the next one to come into my life. And 1 or more single quilts to donate to a nursing home. My mother was in a home when she died a few months ago and a friend’s sister went to one early this month.

It’s hard to see the prints. They look small. I am interested in a fall cuddler made with my new fave passion – English Paper Piecing. There’s a pattern out there that puts concentric circles of Hexies sort of overlapping one another. If the prints complement the solids (looks like they do) I can use each FQ to anchor a circle with solid radiating around the printed center. Does that make sense? Anyway, it would take all winter to piece this thing by hand. Come on Colorado snow! Goodbye Mosquitos!!! I want winter… Lyn

    Marjorie Nath says:

As much as I would love to make something for myself (they are beautiful), I think those colors would make a wonderful quilt for the couple who’s family has sorta adopted us here in Mexico. Francisco is our translator and go to guy for finding what we need (although, in 5 years he hasn’t been able to find a store that sells cotton material yet alone quilting quality cotton.) I can read Spanish fairly well, I just can’t keep up with the speed of people talking. So for all they have done and continue to do for us, they deserve a quilt made out of beautiful material.

My daughter, and only child, is heading off to college at the end of next month. Of course, I am helping her prepare for all the things she is going to need in her dorm room. The “Hadley” collection has some of her favorite colors and would be a perfect start to . I would love to make a few things for her: Decorative Pillows, Lap Quilt-Throw to go with her solid grey tufted comforter. Perhaps a laundry bag (looking at using Amy Butlers design from her book) accented with a band of “Hadley” fabrics, etc. She also will be taking her bicycle with her, so maybe a cool basket liner for the rear basket? So many cute possibilities.

There is something about sending her off to college, knowing she has some handmade gifts, that makes me feel like she’ll have a little bit of “home” with her.

  304. 307

First, I would stare at it for a while, before I would even open the bundle. Then I would make as many things as possible and spread the goodness all over: pillows, table runners, a bed runner – you name it! Thanks for the chance at this super give away and thanks to Free Spirit! jacklynnsteven at netzero dot com

Hope I am not too late to enter… thanks for the giveaway. We are moving into a new hour shortly and I would love to make a king duvet cover for a silk duvet that my in-laws brought us back from a recent trip to China.

I’d love to make a quilt for my son to take to college. I love Denyse Schmidt’s fabrics because they are pretty enough for me but sophisticated enough to appeal to many different tastes.
