A Little Low Volume
Low volume sewing is pretty hot right now. For me, one of the biggest challenges is finding low volume prints in my stash. It’s probably pretty obvious that I tend to be attracted to color saturated prints. Amanda from Westwood Acres sells a low volume bundle in her shop on Etsy. She cleverly named it “Inside Voices”, I love that! Amanda asked if I wanted to play around with one of the bundles, and I thought it would be a great way to jump right into the low volume trend.

I was throwing around a few options for this bundle. I was this close to pairing it with some other prints and making a zigzag quilt using this technique by AmandaJean of Crazy Mom Quilts. In the end, I started thinking about my Stepping Stones quilt. I decided to make something using the same basic construction. Columns of fabric that are equal in width, but various lengths. These pieces are from 3″ to 4.5″ long and 3.5″ wide.
I laid it all out Saturday morning. Went to lunch with the family. Came home to this.
“Who me??” Does anyone else have a dog that likes to roll all over your projects. It’s a good thing he’s so cute.

I’m hoping to have this little baby quilt finished up by Valentine’s Day. Can wait to share it with you!

Great variety of prints! It’s going to be a wonderful quilt.
What great looking fabric. Can’t wait to see the finished quilt.
Cores claras acalmam e um pouquinho de cor mais vivo desperta a atenção. Penso que sua colcha vai ficar linda.
Adorable. The quilt and the dog. What is his name. Like you, my stash is all color, and very little low volume.
His name is Delux.
My husband named him.
I’ve been wanting to start something new and I think this is a GREAT project to take on.
Love the little dog, too.
Love the fabric. And, yes I have an 85lb pit bull who loves to help mommy sew, loves to gather fabric out of my scraps and make herself a bed. Oh yes, and destroy polyfill bags……lol
I’ve got some stuff set aside for a low-volume quilt. I can’t wait to start that!
ha ha ha. I have a cat that does that. I sew in a loft with slanted eves, so the floor is currently my design area. I am a kindred spirit about the saturated prints! Love that you introduced “inside voices.” Will investigate and share the love. Happy Sewing.
I too have a dog that loves climbing on my work, shes a Yorkshire Terrier/ Jack Russell cross, so very simiar to yours. Her favourite thing is snuggling up on the quilt while I try to baste it on the floor !
He is precious! My dogs LOVE to lay all over my projects when they are on the floor. I think my dogs think I am laying out another soft place for them. Crazy things.
Man! You and I seem to be on exactly the same page… first we were doing Out to Sea quilts at the same time and now Low Volume.
Great minds and all that….
I love your dog. I have one just like it. They are soooooo sweet. The fabric is great. Funny I’m making a baby quilt too!
Love the dog! And yes, I have two small pups that like to do the same thing if given an opportunity. It would be worse if they rearranged into a better pattern than I laid out!
A friend of mine has a dog that does the same thing to her and then lays across everything. Love all those “inside voices” prints. I’m going to have to put a project like this on my list for the future.
He is the most adorable little doggie!! Sooooo cute!!
Like the quilt too! lol
Your Yorkie is incredibly cute and his haircut is too. Thanks for the Etsy heads up but right now Etsy isn’t working
As soon as it is I shall be there to look at the store you mentioned. I bet your quilt is going to be gorgeous and can’t wait to see it.
Your quilt is really going to be nice. I like the low volume. I’ve wanted to do one for a long time. Delux is adorable! Just trying to help ya
I don’t have a dog that rolls on my projects but do have a cat that makes a beeline for whatever quilt is in the works.
You are going to make a wonderful quilt and your dog is just lovely.Happy sewing!
I love that low-volume bundle. One of the reasons I love reading your blog is you help keep me updated as to latest modern trends
Cute prints. Why do they call it low volume? I’m a newbie quilter sorry to ask a dumb question. conn_and_vans_mom(at)yahoo(dot)com
Nice mixing the low volume with monochromes! Gonna be fab!
Awk he’s adorable. I just started a low volume quilt as well, can’t wait to see yours finished
Such destruction for one so small lol. Loving the LV versus pops of hot pink
Oh my goodness! Too cute! :0) Look at that sweet face!
Showed my husband and we had so much fun laughing and trying to imitate her expression. We had a cute yorkie too and miss her a lot. She was a “quilt designer” too.
Thanks for the inspiration. I look at some fabrics and think, nah, then I see a quilt like yours and think absolutely YES! The bunting is an example of that, and anyone with writing. OK, the writing is still nah, but I’ll think about it.
My new dog has taken to eating scraps of fabric laying around. I would rather she just rolled around in them. I am keeping my space tidier now.
I don’t understand the term “low volume,” either. Is it about value, the number of colors/fabrics in the quilt, density/openness of the prints, or something else that I’m missing entirely?
Can’t wait to see the finish. Your little puppy is so cute.
No dog, but kids who like to roll around in quilts!
It looks like is going to be another great project! Can’t wait to see it when is finished!! You puppy he’s soooo cute.
Mabel
Awwwww, can’t be mad at that cutie pie’s face! Can’t wait to see the final quilt – I’m dying to try a low-volume ditty
Oh my goodness ~ what a cute dog!
I’ve been loving low volume fabrics for a while now and your quilt turned out great!
My cats like to lay on anything I’m doing. They could be in the other room ~ I lay something out on the floor and there they are ~ like it was calling kitty kitty kitty! teehee
Didn’t you know you have an artist in the making…the doggie was trying to put his “creative touch” on it
I do love the fabrics, I too am a COLOR girl, love brights especially. I am very intrigued with all the “text” fabrics that are coming out. I so want to do a quilt with these type fabrics.
Can’t wait to see your completed project
How did I not know that you have such an adorable dog?? : )
My dog likes to lie down on my quilts while they’re in progress too, but fortunately she doesn’t roll. : ) She’s probably just too old for rolling nowadays!
I have 3 yorkies…if I try to layout any quilt on the floor or try to bind any quilt they are all over it…they just magically appear. I call them quilt dogs…they’ve never met a quilt they didn’t like.
Love this quilt! Thanks for turning me onto the Etsy shop
love your quilt! I have two cats that “rearrange” my squares as I dont have wallspace for my designs. I have a design floor. lol
My kitties LOVE it when I have quilts spread out on the floor for measuring or to make a sandwich before quilting. I can always count on their help! Didn’t know dogs helped out with that too!
Okay…..quilt is beautiful but I want the dog! Soooooo adorable!
Ha, he is cute!!
That’s how he gets away with being naughty.
