A Quilt for Her Bed
This is a quilt I’ve been wanting to make for a long time. I wasn’t sure what the design would end up being, what fabric I would use…but I knew I wanted to make a quilt for my little girl’s bed. I feel a tad bit guilty that although I’m a quilter, the quilts on my kid’s beds are store bought. Well now at least one is handmade by mommy.
I started this quilt earlier this summer and planned to make a couple blocks a week. I sized each block at 17.5″ x 17.5″ unfinished so I would only need to make 20 for a twin sized quilt. My block progress stalled for awhile but when I went up to Holly’s for the weekend in July I finished them up.
Of course it took me a bit longer to make the back, baste and quilt. But I’m really happy with the results! The quilt is centered around Sarah Jane Studios’ Children at Play fabric line (one of my all time favorites).
I incorporated a lot of blenders from my stash. There’s really a little bit of everything in here – Patty Young’s Lush Running Stitch, Lizzy House’s Pearl Bracelets, Laurie Wisbrun’s Modern Whimsy circles, some Art Gallery Oval Elements, dots from Heather Ross Lightening Bugs, some of the new stripes from Cloud 9′s Simpatico, some of the yellow Henna Garden by Sandi Henderson, a yellow print from Maude Asbury’s Kitchy Kitchen…plus some of the Children at Play blenders.
I didn’t follow a pattern for the blocks. I just started cutting the center squares and then pulled fabric and worked my way out from the center using different widths for each ring until I reached my goal size. I tried to follow a few rules for my blocks, such as each uses either 3 or 4 fabrics, no more, no less.
One of my favorite parts of this quilt is the back. I decided to incorporate the Parade print from Children at Play. I wanted the print to show across the quilt when it was folded down on her bed.
My poor husband, this quilt was SO big to hold up!
That meant the print needed to be upside down on the back. I added a bit of patchwork above and below. The solid pink is Michael Miller Cotton Couture in Blossom – SO wonderful.
I wanted this quilt to be nice and soft so I quilted it in a grid with horizontal and vertical lines, about 2″ apart.
I love how the quilt compliments her room. She clearly loves it as well!
I know there will be a time in the future (probably way too soon!) where she outgrows this quilt and doesn’t want it on her bed anymore. But I’m hoping it will always hold a special place in her heart and she will maybe even let her own little girls cuddle under it one day.

Ahh, I’m going to be careful with my words here, because I mean this as a super duper complement: your handmade quilt is so professional, it looks storebought! But way better though! Better design, I’m sure better craftmanship too. I bet the whole family’s going to want quilts now.

Aww, that is just beautiful (the picture of the quilt and its recipient)! I wish I had your talent to do something neat for my girls. I can say, though, that Em’s bed has a quilt that was made by a lady in KY who was a member of David’s congregation many years ago. It needs a few repairs, though. So 1 out of 2 ain’t too bad!

This is so lovely Faith! I especially like the fussy cut parade at the top. I am currently making my daughter’s first quilt – like you, I have made loads of quilts for other people and their babies but not my own! It is nearly finished so then I will just have to make sure I make time to make another for daughter #2.

What a beautiful quilt and touching post. I was surprised to read this was the first quilt for her bed. I know you’ve made her at least one before (the one “without” corners), but that/those must have been throws? I also love how much Hayden loves his quilt and even the baby blanket I made for him (one of the first things I ever made) that he still sleeps with. I am already casually looking for inspiration for when Layla gets her big girl bed. I keep meaning to tell you that she still loves her “princess blanket” that you made and sleeps with it every night. I always like to know when my quilts are still being used, considering the effort that goes into them!

YAY! I love it, Faith, especially how you used the Parade print on the backing so it shows up when you turn down the covers on the bed. The only bed-sized quilts I have made are the ones on my kids’ beds, and they are very special to us because they hold the memories of making the quilt as well as years of cuddling up for bed time stories, etc. Your daughter is going to love this quilt, and you’ll be so glad you finally got around to making it for her!

I have just started making a single (twin) bed quilt for my daughter. Only my eldest has a mama made quilt on his bed and I am trying to rectify that so all the kids have a mama made quilt to call their own.

I follow Sarah Jane’s blog and your quilt is BEAUTIFUL!!!! I LOVE the way you did The Parade on the flip down side. I have never seen a quilt lay more beautiful on a bed!! Great work!! And isn’t it a treat to be noticed by Sarah???That quilt is a keeper–no worries!
How could she not? It is precious. I, too, have a bit of mommy guilt over not handmaking the kids’ spreads . . . hope to rectify that within the next year for at least my oldest daughter, and then work my way down the line til I get to the baby. We’ll see how that goes. Have to settle on fabrics first.

Thanks! I actually just “winged it” on this quilt. Start with your center squares around 3″ – 5″ and then just work your way out from there, using various sizes for the borders, until you reach the desired size block. It’s really easy and carefree once you get going!
