Cutting Edge

Cutting Edge Quilt

I was lucky enough this year to have the opportunity to make two quilts for display at Spring Quilt Market. I designed the first quilt to showcase Free Spirits Essentials line. You may remember this fabric photo? Well that stack of fabric became this quilt.

Cutting Edge Quilt

The Cutting Edge quilt is made up of six columns of staggered flying geese, each displaying various shades and prints of one of the colors in the rainbow. I created a paper piecing template for this quilt so everything would match up perfectly. I never thought I’d say it, but I do love paper piecing!

I took some photos while the quilt was in progress…basting…

The quilting is straight lines which echo the flying geese. The turning of the quilt at the points was kind of a pain, but worth the effort.

Cutting Edge Backing

The quilt measure 54″ x 54″ and the backing and binding is a black and white Houndstooth.

I didn’t go to Quilt Market this time but my good friend Lee did and she took a picture for me! I also wrote a pattern for this quilt that was handed out at Quilt Market, but I haven’t seen it available online yet. If and when it does appear, I will update this post with a link. :)

I love the look of flying geese but have found them difficult for me to make. I might have to give your pattern a go… I do love paper piecing and I love this quilt!

Just reiterating everyone’s comments – this is gorgeous! I love the colors, and how you can’t really see the patterned pieces until you see it up close. It’s adorable! Great job.

Love this rainbow effect, too! I drafted up a 6″ x 9″ foundation to try this on, but I also want to try a smaller one for a mini wall hanging. Hmmm, maybe a scrappy one in a size that will utilize some of my charm packs…..

i love this pattern. I think I saw something similar for sale in an ad and can’t find the ad. If it isn’t out yet, would you consider sending the tutorial privately. I bought bright batiks to do this quilt.
