Inspiration Stacks
This year, I decided I need to make more of an effort to step outside the use of complete fabric collections in my projects. It’s so easy for me to just make something with a set of fabric from a certain designer’s line. The fabrics generally look so great together, it’s easy to envision the finished product and fall in love.
But when I see a quilt on Flickr or someone’s blog that I love, nine times out of ten, it is something made from fabric they hand selected from their stash. So, over the last couple weeks, I’ve been creating fabric piles.
Some of these might become quilts, some might not become anything. If only I had 48 hours in a day. But I had a lot of fun pulling fabrics…weighing options…and getting creative.
I hope to post more stacks as the year goes on, to inspire not only myself but hopefully you as well.

love that last stack! pulling fabric combos is one of my favorite parts of quiltmaking.
I love this. I don’t ever have the money to buy a collection and so I just pull fabrics from my random stash too.

I love the Green/Gray/Blue bundle, though they are all beautiful. I love the idea of inspiration bundles. I do that sometimes but it is nice to just grab the collection and get quilting!!
You did great. I never pick a group of fabrics from the same line for my quilts. Usually because my lqs doesn’t have all of the line. Usually just two or three. I love to mix totally odd fabrics together. People tell me they turn out great and I like them. That is what counts.
I can’t decide which one I like best, they are all so happy!
The last stack is my favorite, I love the oranges, reds, and browns together. Great idea!
I love all of those little piles. Picking fabrics to go together feels so intimidating to me, so I also generally rely on fat quarter packs and the like. Thanks for inspiring me to step outside the box a bit!
I’ve made piles, then forgot why!!! I have also stolen fabric from piles to add to a new pile, thus diminishing the original pile so that I must fabric shop to replace the poor depleted pile. And the beat goes on! I have learned to place the opened magazine pages in the midst of the piles so I can remember what I had in mind.
oh my! i love these stacks. once my stash gets a bit bigger i plan to take time to make stacks just like this every day!

You are so right – and I think it’s time for me to follow suite. Over the last couple of years I’ve got totally seduced by lovely fat quarters from certain fabric lines and have made several quilts sticking just to the same ranges – but like you I’m feeling the need to branch out! You’ve given me the push I needed – thank you!!
I’m glad you decided to post your inspiration stacks. As a beginner quilter the hardest thing for me to do is get creative with my color and pattern choices. I always go on the safe side, but I’m really trying to branch out and do something new!
I absolutely love the third stack. And I agree branching out is such fun and can really add depth to a quilt!

Every time I try to pick through my stash to come up with a great combination of fabrics, I chicken out and end up sticking with one fabric collection. I’m not sure what I’m so afraid of. Thanks for the inspiration… it’s one of my goals to try to venture out on my own this year, too.
I usually pull from my stash. And then sometimes shop for a few more pieces (as my stash isn’t huge, just big!) I like your last pull!

Beautiful stacks Faith! I think its a great exercise in color theory. The more you practice the better you get. And with your stash, I’m sure we’ll be seeing lots and lots of great ones this year!

I love making fabric stacks, even if they never get used. I also sometimes love the inspiration I get when my kids drag my fabric off the shelf and it gets randomly piled on the floor, or we quickly throw it back up on the shelves in no particular order. I see things I never would have thought of otherwise.

This is a goal I made for myself for this year. Start mixing and matching. Start pulling my own bundles. Be more confident in fabric selection!
that 3rd stack is gorgeous.
I find that I get really into it whenever I start pulling from my stash to make a quilt. It always makes me wonder why I don’t do it that way more often. Then maybe I could keep my stash under control a bit better. Ha!
My daughter says she is getting married this year, A wedding quilt would be nice.
I would use it to make a prayer quilt to lift the spirits of someone that is ill. This is a gift provided through the church. These fabric choices are very UPlifting! Thanks for the opportunity!

Pretty stacks! I especially love the last one, with the browns, reds, blues and golden yellows. Not a combination I would think of, but really lovely when you see it!

i am a new quilter i use fabrics from one designer only, i am gonna take on that challenge too. mixing it up.
I love all the stacks. However I think I like the first one the best.
I enjoy the dark blue, green, pink and grey pile. It’s a fresh combination of colors that you see often, but not together. Mixin’ it up is pretty fun!

thank you for sharing your inspiration stacks. I made one a couple of weeks ago, too, for a project and pulled fabrics out of my stash around two fabrics I chose first. It’s kind of the same idea. I love seeing your stacks as it gives me new ideas for my stash. Maybe also for fabrics I don’t like so much anymore. I have an idea for a stack I chose where I mixed like and not-like fabrics. I’d like to see more inspiration stacks you choose and the projects you work on with them.
Just love your fabric selections. I have been doing the same thing over the past year. It is such fun to put various colors and patterns together and to realize that the result is WOW!!
