Solstice Stars ~ A Series of Quilt Block Tutorials
Last week I asked for suggestions as to what you would like to see more of on my blog this year. There were lots of great suggestions: quilting basics, color/fabric selection process, smaller projects, sewing with kids. But I think the most requested idea was more quilt-alongs and tutorials.
I have had it in my head for quite some time to make a quilt out of various stars. I decided to incorporate this idea into a series of tutorials so we can all learn together! Over the next five weeks, I will be posting five star quilt block tutorials. Maybe you want to just use this as a skill builder? (There will be paper piecing and probably even some y-seams…both of which are not as scary as they sound and you can find tutorials for them here.) Maybe you want to make a quilt out of one of the stars, repeating? Maybe you want to use all five in a quilt? Maybe you want to add these to other star blocks tutorials online and create a star sampler quilt?
Lots of options! I hope you will join me and we can all learn something new. The “Solstice Stars Series” tab at the top of the blog will contain links to all the tutorials as well as buttons for you to grab for your blogs.
Tutorials will be posted everyday Wednesday, beginning January 18th and ending on February 15th. Finished blocks can be added to the Fresh Lemons Quilts Flickr Group. I will also use the discussion in the Flickr group for any questions. I hope you are as excited as I am!

HI,
I’m excited to try out your stars…Have you seen “Oh Franson” stars….bet these could also be worked in…
I think you are talking about the interlocking stars like these?

I believe at least 2 of the above blocks (the 3rd and 5th) could be made into an interlocking quilt!
I’m not sure about the fresh lemon quilt blogs, but here is the website for the Oh Franson stars….they are a little wonky, but oh so cute…

I hope I can get myself together to make your tutorials…I love starts of all types…but I want to use my stash, if possible, of batiks…so I’m going to try to “have at it”
Fun! You know I love me some paper-pieced stars. : ) These will make for a beautiful quilt!
I’m excited at trying my first tutorial!
What a GREAT idea! So excited to get to make them =)
Sounds fun! Can’t wait to see what you’ve got for us, Faith.
This is so exciting … I can’t wait!
Thank you so much!

I did the summer sampler series when it was 110 outside! Now, it is cold and windy. Good time to begin your star series. Must finish the binding on the summer sampler and the backing on another quilt and I’ll be ready to start next week.
Thanks for all your tips! You explain things very well.
Oh sounds great Faith. I think I will be trying some of these! Looking forward to it!
What a great name! And you rock at designing badges yet again. I’m sure this will be another huge success!
Love this idea Faith. I recently ordered my Brit Bee girls to make Stars for me! They’ve finished, I have 22 beautiful star blocks, and theres only my 3 left to be made. I’m thinking 2, 3, and 4 from the picture above? Love them!
OH, I am super excited
! Thank you!
Oh…I would still like to add a few blocks to my unfinished Summer Sampler! These will be great! (uh-oh, it’s paying off to be a slacker, I will try to wipe that fact from my memory …)
I love stars and these look great. I’m going to give them a go too.

See you soon! x Teje
Awesome, Faith! I have been all about stars lately so i’m excited for this series to get started!
Great! I wanna try. And I’m scared.
Lovely idea, Faith! I know stars are loved all over the quilty world, so bring on the stars!
What a great idea, Faith. I’m looking forward to learning, I love stars and you give such clear, easy to follow instructions. Thanks
These stars are gorgeous, cant wait to see them made up in fabric
Stars are always a favorite of mine. I love the one you have in the center.
excellent!, i look forward to your tutorials!. thank you very much. I love learning new things.
I’m very excited! Love stars and it will be great to see different variations and how they’re made.
How awesome! Thanks so much for setting this all up, it looks amazing and I’m definitely in!
Oh fun! If I wasn’t trying to catch up on sleep in my spare time due to having a 4 week old, I’d definitely be in for this!
Oh my gosh, these are so incredibly gorgeous! I swore no more new projects, but I just have to get in on this! Can’t wait!
Oh my word. This is not making it easy to stick to my “scaling back” plan for spring semester. These are gorgeous! Maybe I can work these in…who needs sleep, right?
I’m super excited!! Thanks! I think it’s important to keep challenge myself to try new things…. paper piecing=scary!! I love that you’ll be “holding our hands” through it all-Ha!
Ooooh, i love stars! I’ll tag along if i can!
I’m not a quilt blogger (ex-book blogger turned life-blogger), so I hope you don’t mind a sort of lurker joining in on the fun. I saw a star sampler quilt at the Dallas quilt show last year and fell in love. I was just looking at the picture (which I keep on my computer desktop) the other day and wishing longingly. So, this is JUST what I’ve been looking for.
I love star and those are fantastic.
I love paper piecing too.
How tempting! I’m trying to make some quilting goals for 2012 and considering joining a few quilt alongs and your stars look really beautiful (especially the middle one)… I am going to take the weekend to motivate myself to finish some other projects and see where I end up by next week. They all look so beautiful! Thanks Faith.
This is awsome! Stars are my favourite blocks.I have some WIP blocks of different stars, mostly based on the saw tooth star so your stars could be a great addition! What size will they be?
They will be 12.5″ unfinished blocks.
Oh, that´s perfect! They´ll fit my other stars.
This looks fun! I recently discovered your blog while looking for an ipad case tutorial and it is now one of my favorites. This morning I emailed you a question regarding your ipad case tutorial. I know you are super busy but if you have time to answer, great. If not, understandable! I’ll figure it out. Can’t wait to see some stars!
Krista
I can’t wait! I’m going to try and make 9 stars using just solids. I’m so glad you’re doing another tutorial and quilt along! I just need to pick a background color
Sounds awesome looking forward to it.
Fun, fun see you on Wednesdays, love stars. Thank you
Hi Faith, Can’t wait for this to start as over the weekend I was thinking I would love to do a star quilt top of different star blocks.
Now I just need to look for the perfect fabric.
Thanks.
PS I’ve done your sampler quilt and enjoyed the process of learning paper piecing.
Ooh, I’m excited! Your mockups are always so pretty!
This is a great idea for the beginning of this year, I will follow you …
Here in France we are already 18, -0)
Just found this on Monday. Today (wednesday) I’ve finished all four blocks! So very inspiring. Thanks sooo much for the great blocks and beautiful tutorials. Can’t wait till next week.
I missed the fun! Rats!
Just love the ones I have found. Could you please give link to others?
