Prism : Quilt and Pattern for Quiltmaker Magazine
** Update: For those that missed out on the issue of Quiltmaker Magazine, I’m excited to announce this pattern is now available for sale for instant download in my shop. **
I feel like I’ve been waiting ages to show you this quilt. Last July, Quiltmaker magazine asked me to create a quilt pattern for their January/February 2012 issue that fit into the category of “modern color”. I designed this quilt, which I call Prism. It uses 99 paper pieced blocks. Simple paper piecing though, I promise!
I spent August working on the quilt, and that even included taking it and my machine on vacation with me so I could get it done on a tight timeline! Luckily I have a very understanding husband.
The quilt is made using all Free Spirit designer solids. These are all the bright colors, except for the dark purple.

Pink, Fuchsia, Tango, Orange, Saffron, Lemon, Kiwi, Apple Green, Sky, Rocket Blue, Lavender, (Violet not shown)
So the magazine article itself is really cool. I’m lucky enough to be featured with two other bloggers I’m sure you know – Rachel from Stitched in Color and Elizabeth from Don’t Call Me Betsy. They both also have great patterns in the issue. We were all interviewed on our thoughts regarding use of color and there is a write up before the patterns.
My two pages in all their glory!
The final quilt measures 70″ x 85″. I quilted it in straight lines, on both sizes of the horizontal and vertical seams. I also quilted in the ditch on both sides of the white fabric.
The back is solid white with a simple stripe of all the colors I used on the front.
The solids and the pattern of this quilt make it probably the most modern I’ve created. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out and am really thrilled to be in my first print magazine. I hope you will check it out!
And speaking of pattern making, Generation Q has a post up on their blog about what *really* goes into writing a pattern. If you are interested in pattern making yourself, or just are curious into the time and effort involved, head on over.

Just beautiful! Gotta go find the magazine!
Beautiful quilt and Beautiful colors! Congratulations on your article.
love this quilt pattern!
i picked up the magazine because Sonja from the Vancouver MQG has a pattern in it (i love the little birds!), but i was so pleased to see so many modern patterns in it as well! and it made me happy that modern bloggers were getting some props too!
my other MQG is just starting their Habitat challenge, and i’m thinking that your pattern will be perfect for it. the fabric line is so graphic that it looks fabulous with space around it, and it’ll work perfectly instead of the bright colours. i’m excited to start on it!
A friend of mine was telling me about this quilt, so I had to pop in and check it out. I love it! The bookstore is definitely on my “to do” list today! Congratulations!
congratulations, Faith! it’s a striking quilt.
i love this quilt….i was standing in line, flipped through the issue, and your quilt sealed the deal- into my cart the magazine went….
Wow, this is gorgeous. Love how you used different shades of grey. Wishing I had a few different greys for a project I’m working on this week. Maybe I’ll have to make a trip to the LQS tomorrow.
Hi Faith!
I am in love with this quilt! Are you ever going to release this pattern for sale on your site? I would love to buy it!
Faith,
Fantastic quilt! Congratulations on being published. It must be a real thrill, being recognized for doing you love to do! Looking forward to seeing your name in many more magazines
Wow, this prism quilt just jumped out at me from your side pics! It is so dynamic– I think this one would even make my husband want to get into quilting. Congrats on getting it into Quiltmaker. I would certainly love to give it a go,
This is stunning!! I’ve been frantically searching for a quilt pattern that would be appropriate for my 24 yr. old Grandson. He works 19 of 21 days at his job, he rebuilds engines, and he’s helping his girlfriend raise her 2 yr. old son. He told me he wants his quilt to be blue, black and grey–he’s afraid he’ll get it dirty if it’s light colored. So, I think I’ll change the white to medium to dark blue, and the multi-colored corners to light blues, aquas, sea glass colors. Also I’ll need to vary the greys, those will become my lights and add some sparkle. I’ve never mastered paper piecing, but for this pattern and my Grandson, I’ll give it another try. I do believe you have solved my problem–thank you so much!! I knew that whenever I finally did see it I would instantly know it, and TA DA!! Thanks again–love your patterns!!!
Your patterns are beautiful! Do you sell your quilts? If yes, I’d like to know how much a king sized quilt in the Prism design would be – LOVE IT! Thanks!
I have waited too long to go looking for the Jan/Feb issue of Quiltmaker. Is there a way to get a back issue. The spring issue is on newsstands already.
Found this pattern in a magazine that I inherited from a passed away member of our quilt guild. Funny, that when I looked it up on Google to see if anyone had made it in other colors, I ended up back on your page. Your Kaliedescope quilt was my inspiration for starting quilting, and now I am going to make this quilt for my brother in-law and his new wife. So excited to get started.
So Beautiful.. I am glad to see an exciting QAL too..
