Twilight ~ And Some Weekend News

** This pattern is now available in my pattern shop! **

I have been waiting to share this quilt with you for months…8 months to be exact! When editing my photos for this post last night, I noted the datestamp on my quilt photo was August 6, 2012. I can’t believe it’s been that long! I remember bringing my fabric and sewing machine on summer vacation last year, working to finish this quilt up.

Last Spring, Fons & Porter asked if I was interested in designing a quilt for a future issue, similar to the “style” of my Cutting Edge quilt which had been displayed at Spring Quilt Market. Well, that was a no brainer for me – of course I would! I was lucky enough to work again with the wonderful designer solids by Free Spirit.

Well, all these months later, I am excited to share with you that my quilt is in the now-available May/June 2013 issue of Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting. You can even buy a kit of my quilt, how cool is that!

This quilt measures 60″ x 72″ and the stars are all paper pieced for perfect accuracy. I quilted mine with a nice meandering design all over. I just love the solids and stars, the colors…I can’t wait to get it back in the mail!

Fabrics used in this quilt: Free Spirit Designer Solids in Lemon, Peach Blush, Chartreuse, Caribbean Sea, Light Jade, Jade, Sand Dune, Dogwood, Dark Coral, Flamingo, Winter White.

I thought it would be fun to share with you my original mock up for the quilt when I was in the design phase. (I do most of my design work in Photoshop).

I think the finished quilt is pretty close to the mockup.

And in weekend news, I’ll be speaking this Sunday (4/21) at 2:00 at the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild. They meet at St. Peter’s Church at 500 Hannah, Forest Park, IL. Just a little talk about my journey through quilting, my style, what inspires me, my design process. Hopefully people will find it interesting. I always enjoy enthusiastic nodders, so if you go, you know, nod along. lol I’ll also be bringing my newly finished Arkansas Traveler Quilt to share, which I haven’t posted here yet. Is that any motivation? šŸ™‚

Visitors just have to pay $5, so I hope you will stop by!

As I was casually looking through my copy of Love of Quilting, I turned the page, and my heart skipped a beat when I saw your quilt! My first thought was ‘that quilt looks like the beautiful work of Faith’. And then I saw your picture! I’m not sure which of us is more proud–you, for your gorgeous designs and the gift you have for choosing just the right colors, or me, for recognizing the work of one of my quilting gods! Congratulatons, Faith. The only mistake Fons and Porter made was not putting your quilt on the cover! You are truly an inspiration!

Does it really require 7 yards of white for the solid white blocks, when the backing only requires 4 yards?

    Thank you

Hi Karen – Thanks! Yes, it really does need that much white for the top. There are a lots of paper pieced components, so you do lose some fabric there, and also just a ton of seams.

So beautiful! Looking at a quit like this is like having endorphins become active in the inner most part of my creative being! ie.,makes me want to forget everything else and just cut and sew and sew and sew. Unfortunately, God only gives us 24 hours a day and we have to sleep, eat and work….darn!

Your quilt is lovely! The colors all work so well together. I really do question the need for 17 1/2 yards of fabric for the front of a twin size quilt. I have been quilting for years and even with paper piecing that seems extreme. It would make for a very expensive quilt top.

      April 22, 2013

Hi Maryann – thanks for your comment! For the quilt top, the magazine definitely rounded up my amounts for the brights. So if you bought the fabrics as listed, you would have leftovers for either some pretty accents on the back, coordinating pillows, or another project.

When writing a pattern for paper piecing, I try to take into account all skill levels. Some people are new or have trouble with angles (which this pattern has) and require more fabric. Some people are super experienced and need only slightly larger than the exact shape of the piece they are piecing. When starting a new paper piecing pattern, I always recommend cutting fabric for 1 block first and piecing that. If the fabric sizes work well for you, great! If you need slightly larger or smaller fabrics, this is the perfect chance to find that out and adjust the fabric requirements accordingly. This pattern calls for 262 paper pieced blocks, so there is some waste with all those seams and trimming.

I just ordered the magazine just for your pattern (although I am sure there will be other nice patterns too) but I want to make your quilt! I can’t seem to find the specific colored fabrics you used in your quilt. I love the colors you choose but I don’t want to buy the kit as I just purchased a whole bolt of Kona white. Do you happen to know of an online site that I might be able to purchase all 10 colors?
