Scrap Plus Week 2 ~ A Quilt Along at We All Sew

Scrap Plus Quilt Along : Fresh Lemons Quilts

For those of you following my Scrap Plus Quilt Along/Tutorial over at BERNINA’s We All Sew (Week 1 and Week 2), I hope you have been enjoying digging through your scraps and making some blocks. This week I’m talking about the quilt top assembly and quilting.

I mentioned last week that these are 12″ finished blocks. Scrappy blocks are always great for quilting bees and group charity quilts.

Another fun and creative quilt idea for using the layout…since these blocks are a standard size, you can easily swap them out and use nine of your own 12″ block designs. I’m such a fan of stars and modern samplers, I think this layout would make a beautiful sampler with some of the blocks from the Solstice Stars Series and Summer Sampler Series.

I hope you will go check it out at BERNINA’s We All Sew! I’d love to see what you make.

Scrap Plus ~ A Quilt Along at We All Sew

Scrap Plus Quilt Along : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Happy Friday everyone! Do you remember this quilt that I was working on for BERNINA’s We All Sew blog? I just received word that Week 1 of the Quilt Along went live today!

You can find the directions to make these Scrap Plus blocks over at We All Sew.

These blocks are beginner friendly and would also be perfect for quilting bees. They finish up at 12″ x 12″. Next week there will be a post with instructions for the quilt top layout, resulting in a 56″ x 64″ quilt. I hope you enjoy the pattern and will consider making your own Scrap Plus quilt!

Spidey ~ A Finished Quilt

Spidey Quilt : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Despite this lingering flu turned cold, I finished the Spidey quilt! (I apologize in advance if this post is a bit delirious!) I rallied on Tuesday night and quilted it, then added the binding on Wednesday morning. Who says you can’t pair Spiderman fabric with Denyse Schmidt and Anna Maria Horner? I think it turned out pretty cute!

Unfortunately it was a cold and dreary day, and the ground is still wet with the remnants of 5 inches of Spring snow we had on Monday. I wanted to get some better pictures before gifting it yesterday afternoon, but just didn’t have the opportunity to go anywhere besides my deck.

I mentioned in my last post that I used the same design as my Aye Aye Captain quilt. The rectangles are cut 3″ x 10″ and there are 6 columns and 24 rows. Like the Aye Aye Captain quilt, I rounded the corners of this quilt. I just love that look! I simply turned a bowl upside down and used it to mark the corners and cut. When rounding your corners, the only thing you need to remember is to use bias cut binding so it will curve nicely around those edges. (I learned that the hard way early on into quilting).

This time I quilted it on each side of the seams, about 1/2″ away. I just used the edge of my foot as a guide. The backing is a navy blue minky. A few of you asked if I use batting still when I make a quilt with minky. I do! I really like the weight of a quilt with a lightweight batting (I use Quilter’s Dream Request Loft) and minky.

And you can see from the quilting, it has a nice “poof” to it as well. I just use a lot of pins when basting – about one every 3 inches – and make sure the pressure of my foot when quilting is adjusted to not be super heavy. I adjusted my BERNINA 750QE pressure setting from 50 to 0 when quilting this quilt.

Hanna Hearts and Spidey are now living with their new owners, a couple special new members of our family. I’m hoping they are much loved!

Scrappy Sneak Peek

Straight Line Quilting : Fresh Lemons Quilts

It’s been a continued busy but oh-so-fun week in my sewing space. Yesterday I stitched on the last of the binding and took pictures of my quilt that will be on BERNINA’s We All Sew blog as a scrappy pattern/tutorial/quilt along.

It’s pretty much killing me that I can’t show you full photos of the actual project yet. I can tell you that it’s lap sized and a combination of alternate gridwork, negative space and scraps. You can also see that I did a lot of straight line quilting. I’ll post as soon as I know the dates the project will be live!
