English Paper Piecing ~ A New-to-Me Adventure

English Paper Piecing ~ Fresh Lemons Quilts

Every summer, around this time, I start to get the itch. You see, in the summer my kids are desperate to get outside and play. And I can’t blame them ~ when you live somewhere that gets so cold in the winter, you really appreciate the warm weather months. But being outside every day means I’m not in my sewing space every day. I know you all are creative people too, so you understand what I mean when I say I need to do or make something. It’s almost like breathing to me.

So, I’ve decided to take up some hand work. Specifically, to learn english paper piecing. I can work on projects while being outside with the kids, sitting outside at camps, and going on road trips. Everything is small and travels well. Perfect! (I feel like I’m the last blogger in existence to start down this path, but better late than never, right?)

I was never super interested in the hexie craze that happened online over the last several years. I did love the quilts I saw…I just didn’t really feel the urge to make one. But then I found Jodi from Tales of Cloth on Instagram, and I was incredibly inspired. I love the mixing of shapes! (I even ordered one of her Shape Family sets so I can play around with my own designs at home.)

So far I’ve made a whole 3 “block” units. But I’m only one day in, so not bad, right? I’m not sure what I’m going to do with these yet, but I’m going to keep going. I am using 1″ hexagons and 1″ 6 point diamond pieces from Paper Pieces. Side note: I guess I didn’t realize just how small 1″ was when I ordered these! It’s small! I also ordered some books – to learn techniques, see patterns, and generally be inspired. These are All Points Patchwork by Diane Gilleland, The New Hexagon by Katja Marek, and Quilt Lovely by Jen Kingwell (affiliate links).

I plan to have a lot more to share as the summer progresses. Here’s to slow stitching and enjoying the outdoors at the same time!

Summer Sampler 2016 ~ Week 7

Summer Sampler 2016 : Week 7 / Trail Crossing

This week marks week seven of the Summer Sampler 2016 quilt along, and we are up to our eyeballs in curves! Luckily, we are all experts after the Snow Cone block during week three. Our block this week is called Trail Crossing, and was designed by one of my cohosts, Lee Heinrich of Freshly Pieced.

There are a total of 8 curves to sew on this block, so you will definitely find your rhythm with the technique.

Here are all my blocks together! I am still leaning towards remaking my week 2 block ~ don’t be surprised if you see a new one in there one of these weeks!

Summer Sampler 2016 ~ Week 6

Summer Sampler 2016 Quilt Along : Corner Canyon by Amy Smart

Here we are in Week 6 of the Summer Sampler quilt along! This week’s block, Corner Canyon, was designed by Amy Smart of Diary of a Quilter. When I was making the Corner Canyon block, the word that really stuck in my head was “clever”.

This block has just that sort of clever construction ~ where you sew different shapes together, cut, open, sew more shapes to it, cut, open…then BAM! You have a block unit with a bunch of triangles and you aren’t entirely sure how that magically happened. 🙂

Our first six blocks are now complete, and it’s starting to look great! At this point all the colors are included a bit, and you can start getting a feel for the overall quilt.

Summer Sampler 2016 ~ Week 5

Summer Sampler 2016 Quilt Along

I can’t believe we are already on Week 5 of the Summer Sampler quilt along. If you follow me on Instagram, you know I was on vacation last week. Our family explored the Pacific Northwest and it was beautiful and amazing. I somehow managed to take 2000 pictures…I’m not sure how long it will take me to go through those. All summer? 🙂

This morning I have been playing catchup. The first thing I did was sit down and stitch up the Sugarhouse block by Katie of Swim, Bike, Quilt.

I love this block, especially the fact that it came together so quickly! I’m continuing with my scrappy theme, and that is really the only part that slows me down. Unfolding, pressing, refolding for every piece is a bit tedious.

Here are Weeks 1 through 5 all together. I am just loving it!
