Cookbook Sampler

Cookbook Sampler : Fresh Lemons Quilts

I finished my Cookbook Sampler this week! I am really in love with this little quilt. The colors are so cheerful, but I must admit the fabric pull was a challenge for me this time. I had a vision in my mind but (despite my fabric stash) didn’t have a lot of the exact shades of colors I was looking to use. I think I need to put a little more thought into my future fabric purchases.

This quilt uses nine blocks from The Quilt Block Cookbook by Amy Gibson. I tried to choose blocks that I felt worked well together, many with a sort of star look to them.

I had plans to complete this quilt last week, but I decided to wait and order fabric for the backing. I chose Writings on Walls from the Chalk & Paint collection by Sew Caroline. I love the light green text with the hand lettering feel. The binding is a favorite by Lizzy House, Chasing Butterflies in Backyard.

This quilt finished up about 50″ x 50″. I quilted it with straight lines, about 3/8″ apart, using the dual feed on my BERNINA 770QE. I forgot how long straight line quilting takes! I do love how it looks. (My body is sore from a long day at the machine though.)

I am thinking about hanging this one up in my sewing room to get me through winter. What do you think?

Spidey Quilt

Spidey Quilt : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Oh, what a weekend. Our house was hit hard with the flu. Happy first day of Spring, right? I was actually hoping to finish this Spiderman quilt on Saturday but that didn’t happen.

Spidey Quilt Fabric : Fresh Lemons Quilts

I jokingly posted this photo of fabric on Instagram and captioned it “the things we do for kids”. I can honestly say I never thought I’d make a quilt with Spiderman fabric but as many people pointed out, these are pretty great designs as far as licensed fabric goes. And I must agree, especially the two on the left. Others commented that their little (or even big!) superhero loving son/daughter/grandson/granddaughter/wife/husband would be thrilled with something made from Spiderman fabric. So a lot of us are in the same boat. 🙂

These Spiderman prints are by Camelot Fabrics. You can find them at Fat Quarter Shop and Harts Fabric. I tried to pick prints that I could see being combined with modern fabrics from my stash.

I do have the top all sewn together and the minky all set for the back. I’m using the same pattern as my son’s Aye Aye Captain quilt. It’s a great simple layout for showcasing a variety of prints and colors. Fingers crossed I am able to baste it and get quilting today!

Hanna Hearts Quilt Top!

Hanna Hearts Quilt Top: Fresh Lemons Quilts

Back home and back at the sewing machine this week! I finished up my Hanna Hearts quilt top and it’s just so cute! (Once again this was confirmed by my 8 year old daughter.) Adding sashing is not exactly my favorite part of making a quilt (yawn) but I did manage to get it all done in two days.

I cut my sashing 2-1/2″ wide (so finishes at 2″). I actually planned on making an even wider border around the outside edge but ran out of white fabric and couldn’t remember which particular white I was using. I know, I know…label my neutrals already! Quilting soon on this one. 🙂

You can read more about the makings of this quilt, including links to the heart block tutorial from Cluck Cluck Sew, here and here.

I thought I’d share just a few photos of my Hanna Hearts quilt progress while I am away at QuiltCon. It’s so cute! My 8 year old assures me.

(And totally unrelated to this quilt…if you’d like to see real time updates from QuiltCon today and tomorrow, be sure to follow me on Instagram!)

I am planning on adding some white sashing between everything. Probably either 1-1/2″ or 2″ wide. I mentioned in my last post that I used Allison of Cluck, Cluck, Sew’s Simple Heart Tutorial. These are the 4″ hearts. I just love them!

I’m going to back this one with minky so it’s nice and soft for the recipient!
