Fresh Spool Series ~ Triangle Spool Block Pattern

Fresh Spool Series ~ Triangle Spool Block Pattern

Welcome to week two of the Fresh Spool Series! I’ve already seen a lot of last week’s Scrappy Spool Blocks popping up on Instagram – so fun!

This week I’m sharing my Triangle Spool Block pattern. For this block, I chose a couple scrappy blue prints.

You may notice that the spool isn’t centered vertically in the block. This is because I’m modeling these blocks off my original Spool Mini Quilt. I’m continuing to use the Essex linen for the background, as I plan to put all five spools in a row when I’m finished.

Don’t the first two blocks look cute together?

Fresh Spool Series : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Happy Monday everyone! Last month when I shared my spool pattern for the Good Neighbors Pincushion party, I started to get the itch to make more (and bigger) spool blocks. I get a lot of emails about my spool block mini quilt that I made back in 2011. At that time, I was just learning paper piecing and drew up the block patterns as a test for myself. I didn’t save them or plan on publishing them.

I came up with some paper pieced block designs that I thought would be fun to share over the next 5 weeks. All of these blocks are 6″ x 6″ finished, so larger than the pincushion block I posted last month. They are all Foundation Paper Pieced. If you are new to the technique, I have a tutorial right here on my blog.

For week one, I’m revisiting the spool block from the Good Neighbors Pin Cushion party. I resized this block to finish out at a 6″ x 6″ square. I chose an essex linen for the background and a scrappy assortment of oranges for my spool.

It is a bit Halloweeny without even trying. :)

I hope you enjoy piecing spool blocks with me over the next several weeks!

I also have a bit of sponsor news to share with you today. I’m sad to say that two of my wonderful sponsors are closing up shop due to other opportunities.

Dragonfly Fabrics – Store Closing Sale
LiMa Sews – Liquidation Sale

I hope you will check out the deals and wish them both the best with their future endeavors.

Good Neighbors ~ A Pincushion Party and Pattern!

Good Neighbors Pincushion Party : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Welcome to my turn celebrating Amanda Jean of Crazy Mom Quilt’s new fabric collection for Connecting Threads, Good Neighbors!

Good Neighbors Pincushion Party : Fresh Lemons Quilts

I was lucky enough to get an early peek at Good Neighbors (which is now available!) and it is really just a perfect collection for piecing and quilting. And pincushion making! There are a rainbow assortment of monochromatic prints, just my style.

I received a charm pack for stitching up my pincushion. I decided to step into a time machine and go way back on my blog to 2011. I created a paper pieced spool quilt block, inspired by this mini quilt from 4 years ago.

I arranged my fabric “thread” in a rainbow gradient. For the background I used a linen. The back of the pincushion is an awesome red and white dot print from Good Neighbors. I filled my pin cushion with crushed walnut shells, purchased at my local pet store in the reptile section. Yep, you never know what you are going to use when sewing.

If you’d like to make your own mini spool pincushion, I put together this paper piecing template for you! Just click on the image to download it. Be sure to print it at 100% or “Actual Size”, and check the scale icon before piecing. The pattern is charm pack friendly and finishes up at 4-1/2″ x 4-1/2″.

Scrappy Kaleidoscope ~ A Finished Quilt

Scrappy Kaleidoscope : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Sorry it’s been a bit quiet around here the last few days, but I promised myself I wouldn’t post again until I finished my Scrappy Kaleidoscope quilt. And it’s done! I love this quilt so much – it’s going to be a hard one to give away. But the recipient deserves much thanks for all her work and care over the last year, so I’m happy to have made something pretty for her.

The prints are scrappy and the background is FreeSpirit Solids Sand Dune (personal favorite). As I mentioned in a previous post, I made this quilt by paper piecing 12″ (finished) kaleidoscope blocks. I made a paper piecing template, and you can download it here. Be sure to print 4 copies at 100% or Actual Size to make your own 12″ block.

There are 30 blocks in this quilt, and it measures 60″ x 72″. I quilted it in a meandering free motion design. The lighter colors just didn’t photograph well with the quilting texture last night, but it is oh-so-pretty in person and I wouldn’t change one piece of fabric.

Above is a nice shot from while I was getting ready to baste.

The backing and binding are Wordfind in Pink by Melody Miller for Cotton + Steel, part of her Playful collection. I love it so much! I’ve also pieced in a specially embroidered label on the back, with To, From, and Date details. Sorry, no pics as I don’t want to spoil the surprise too much.

Next up, basting and quilting the Cubs Quilt! I’m thinking straight lines for that one. My back is sore just thinking about it!
