Union Square ~ Quilt Top

Union Square ~ Quilt Top

I spent much of the rainy day here yesterday at my sewing machine. I finished up my Union Square quilt blocks and then started playing with a layout. I mentioned earlier that I didn’t have a lot of the background fabric, so I wasn’t feeling very confident that I would come up with something I really liked.

After stitching the blocks together, I decided it needed a border to make it pop. And it turns out, I had the perfect print. The blue canvas border is from Rain Walk by Anna Graham of Noodlehead, called Ripple in Navy.

I cannot wait to show you how it looks all laid out. Sorry for the “sneak peeks”, but it’s such a great effect that I don’t want to spoil the final reveal. I plan on quilting it soon, although I just love it on the design wall right now.

Union Square in Progress and Pattern Shop

Union Square Quilt Block Progress : Fresh Lemons Quilts

I’ve spent a bit of time this week working on my Union Square quilt blocks. I really like this metallic linen I’m using for the background. I’m kicking myself for only buying a yard. When I got it, I figured I would use it on a bag, not a quilt. Oh well – I’m sure there are plenty of other awesome metallic linens out there, right?

I was in my happy place, chain paper piecing the corner segments for these blocks.

Now to assemble them. When sewing the corner components to the nine patch, I will admit it is a bit tricky getting everything lined up just right. I’m going to cut myself some slack and not worry if it’s a millimeter off.

I also wanted to let everyone know that my Picnic Point quilt pattern (PDF) is now in the shop! (It’s also available on Etsy and Craftsy.) I know a few of you have found it already. 🙂 Thank you!

Mayflower

Mayflower Quilt : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Throughout the end of January, I spent some time working on this little quilt featuring the vintage Mayflower block. The Mayflower is one of the 20 blocks featured in Vintage Quilt Revival. I thought it was a great option to showcase those new Carolyn Friedlander fabrics that arrived last month. I combined the new Carkai fabrics with some from Carolyn’s previous lines, and one purple Denyse Schmidt print from her Chicopee collection.

The background of this quilt is a mixture of two white-on-white prints from Cotton + Steel. That wasn’t my original plan, but I ran out of the first fabric so I had to improvise. I think it was a happy accident though!

The quilt layout was inspired by another Vintage Quilt Revival pattern – my Geometric Slide quilt. I still enjoy the look of blocks slowly traveling down the quilt.

My Mayflower quilt is 36″ x 36″, and it serves an important purpose. I created it as a base for a couple tutorials I have coming soon on BERNINA’s We All Sew Blog – basting and binding. I will post here when those go live! I think they are great for beginners, but also for experienced quilters who enjoy seeing how others work.

Fresh Spool Series ~ Heart Spool Block

Fresh Spool Series at Fresh Lemons Quilts

Welcome to week five – and the last week – of the Fresh Spool Series! Time is just flying by, and the holidays will be here before we know it. It’s been awesome watching all the blocks pop up on social media. Today I’m sharing my Heart Spool Block pattern with you.

The Heart Spool Block is similar to the Log Cabin Spool Block, in that you need to piece a portion of it (the inner heart) first, and then use that in your final paper piecing template. (If you are new to foundation paper piecing, you can find a tutorial on my blog.)

Midway through making my block, you can see the finished heart that is incorporated as “Piece 1” in the final paper piecing template.

I’m not entirely sure what I’m going to do with them yet. I could finish them up similar to my original Spool Mini Quilt…or come up with something new. I’ll share once I figure out my plan!
