Blue Squared ~ A Finished Quilt

Blue Squared : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Another school year has gone by, and I always find myself a mix of emotions. Proud of my kids for working their hardest, sad that they are growing up so fast, excited to have them all to myself for a couple months, a bit worried about how I will mix work and time with my kids while they are home, but ready to slow down, relax and enjoy the moment. May is always a crazy month ~ end of year presentations, celebrations, graduations, birthdays, camping, soccer tournaments… I admittedly don’t do so well with being over scheduled. But I did manage to find time to finish a gift for a teacher, with approximately one day to spare.

I think I mentioned in my last post that I asked my daughter what colors her teacher liked. She came up with blue and black. I sketched out a rough plan and used it as my base for this quilt. My daughter embroidered a label for the back (I erased the teacher’s name in the photo, but it is there in real life. 🙂 ) I think it’s a nice touch to have the kids work on a piece like that.

It’s quilted in a free motion meandering design. I forgot to measure it before I wrapped it up, but I believe it’s around 54″ x 60″. That was my plan anyway! The backing is Puff Porcelain by Rashida Colman-Hale for Cotton + Steel. One of my current favorites!

I am so grateful for all the work my kid’s teachers put into the year. They really are like a third parent. It is a hard job that takes a very special person. We are lucky!

Sewing for Boston

To Boston With Love and Quilts for Boston

I spent most of last week, like the rest of America, watching the news and thinking what.the.heck. The bombings at the Boston Marathon were just, well, unbelievable. I think when bad things happen, many of us are left wondering what we can do to help. I know I personally feel pretty small and insignificant in such moments.

Boston Quilting Donations

I was really grateful when I saw the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild organizing To Boston with Love ~ a call for flag bunting that will fly somewhere in Boston this summer (location to be determined).

Amy from During Quilt Time is working on flag collecting – so individuals and guilds in the USA won’t have to worry about shipping to Canada. Shipping details are here.

B is for Boston

I made 3 flags today. It was fun and therapeutic.

Liberated Heart

The Boston Modern Quilt Guild is also working on giving comfort to those who truly need it after the bombings through Quilts for Boston. They are making quilts and need us to send them blocks. You can find all those details on their blog. I also made a block for this initiative, and hope to make a few more before mailing them off.
