Modern Machine Quilting with Catherine Redford

Modern Machine Quilting with Catherine Redford : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Last month, I came home from a holiday trip to Michigan to some very fun mail. Quilter, teacher, and friend Catherine Redford sent me a copy of her newest Quilting Arts Workshop DVD, Modern Machine Quilting. With the kids back in school, I finally had a chance yesterday to pop it into my laptop and check it out.

Catherine and I live about 15 minutes away from each other, and I’ve had the chance to see her work in person many times. She is a very experienced and talented quilter, so I knew her expertise would show in this video. At the beginning of this 1 hour and 15 minute class, Catherine gives some information and her tips on batting, thread, needles, pressing, batting tape, feet, and stitch plates. All very important components to getting the best results with your machine quilting.

She moves on and discusses the importance of sketching out your plan and showing how to practice your designs on paper.

I love how before demonstrating each type of quilting in this video, Catherine is shown sketching out the design first.

Catherine covers a huge range of free motion quilting motifs, from stippling to swirls and loops, from filler designs (flowers, puzzle pieces, pebbles, clam shells, flames, snail trails) to borders. She even shows how to make those popular feathers and ferns.

Throughout the video, you also see finished mini quilts that incorporate a lot of the designs. And Catherine also gives great tips – my favorite is to remember to breathe while quilting! How many of us have found ourselves completely tense and holding our breath when quilting? I know I have.

Quilting a Snowflake

Snowflake Quilt : Fresh Lemons Quilts

I dedicated a lot of quality time to my Snowflake quilt yesterday. I can’t wait to share it with you all! I quilted the entire thing from the moment the kids got on the school bus until lunch. As soon as I lay a quilt down on the carpet, my dog appears out of no where and lays on it. I call him my Quality Control Tester.

I made some scrappy binding after lunch and then kicked my feet up on the couch by the big window and stitched it on. I love how Fall looks outside. The sky is just so distinct this time of year and the trees behind my house are changing colors. This is my absolute favorite season.

Time to put some finishing touches up on the pattern and get it ready to share over at BERNINA – soon!

A Doll Quilt Finish

Kansas Dugout Quilt Block

A finish is a finish no matter how small, right? Confession: I am really, really bad about completing projects that I start in a class. But when I got home from Sewtopia and started unpacking, my daughter saw my Kansas Dugout quilt blocks that I intended to make as a doll quilt for her, and she asked me finish it up that night. So we went upstairs to my sewing room and I let her pick the backing and binding, and even the quilting style. She helped me pin baste, selected a meandering pattern, and watched as I finished it up.

I was so incredibly slow making these blocks in class. It probably didn’t help that I was talking to friends the whole time. I only made 9, but I think they turned out cute! I even fussy cut the mermaids from my precious Mendocino scraps. I’m pretty sure the doll and my 8 year old are happy with the quilt!

I’ve also made progress on my Scrappy Kaleidoscope Quilt this week. The top is finished! (The picture was before I sewed the rows together.)

I mentioned before that this is one of two gifts that I need to get done before the end of the school year. Feeling pretty good to not have waited until the very last minute for once!

Unraveled ~ Scraps, Inc

Unraveled, a quilt by Faith Jones for Scraps, Inc : Fresh Lemons Quilts

About a year ago, I was invited to contribute a project to an upcoming book featuring modern, scrappy quilts. I really love scrappy so of course I said yes. The book had another bonus as well, it was being published by Lucky Spool ~ a new company created by the extremely talented Susanne Woods. Susanne is something of a legend in the craft book publishing industry, known for making absolutely beautiful books and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to work with her.

Today I finally get to share my quilt with you, Unraveled. Created last winter, Unraveled is a simple and clean design that has fun with negative space. I know a lot of my patterns are paper pieced…but this one is not. (Some of you are probably cheering right now!) This quilt pattern is great for beginners on up.

I used a collection of plum, aqua and chartreuse prints, and I’m quite pleased with the combination. Unraveled measures 68″ x 85″ and is quilted in a free motion meandering design.
