Mayflower

Mayflower Quilt : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Throughout the end of January, I spent some time working on this little quilt featuring the vintage Mayflower block. The Mayflower is one of the 20 blocks featured in Vintage Quilt Revival. I thought it was a great option to showcase those new Carolyn Friedlander fabrics that arrived last month. I combined the new Carkai fabrics with some from Carolyn’s previous lines, and one purple Denyse Schmidt print from her Chicopee collection.

The background of this quilt is a mixture of two white-on-white prints from Cotton + Steel. That wasn’t my original plan, but I ran out of the first fabric so I had to improvise. I think it was a happy accident though!

The quilt layout was inspired by another Vintage Quilt Revival pattern – my Geometric Slide quilt. I still enjoy the look of blocks slowly traveling down the quilt.

My Mayflower quilt is 36″ x 36″, and it serves an important purpose. I created it as a base for a couple tutorials I have coming soon on BERNINA’s We All Sew Blog – basting and binding. I will post here when those go live! I think they are great for beginners, but also for experienced quilters who enjoy seeing how others work.

I didn’t attend last Quilt Market, so I spent some time on Instagram following those who were there. I fell hard for Carolyn Friedlander’s new line, Carkai. I’m a huge fan of Carolyn’s designs. I think I’ve worked fabrics from all of her lines into various projects ~ Architextures, Botanics, Doe, and now Carkai. They are colors and designs that I just know will work when used together or combined with other designers ~ truly great stash builders!

The one thing I’ve regretted most with the past collections is not buying enough of it. When buying a full line of fabric, I generally buy a fat quarter set. There are just so many pieces in single fabric lines these days! But with Carolyn’s fabrics, I find that I run out of that fat quarter, and then suddenly the “perfect green” is out of print. So this time, I splurged on a half yard set. I’m so happy I did!

This is a fun pull from Carkai, with a representative from most of the colors. The full collection has a lot of prints that would make excellent additions to your low volume stash.

I can’t decide if I should make a full quilt featuring this line, combine it with other lines by Carolyn, or just continue to work pieces into my projects as I go. Maybe all three!

Four Square ~ A Finished Quilt and Pattern

Four Square Quilt : Fresh Lemons Quilts

My Four Square quilt is finished, and the rain stopped for a short break on Tuesday to allow me a photo opportunity! I shared some in progress photos of these blocks as I was planning and stitching – here and here. As I mentioned earlier, this quilt was inspired by a shirt I bought this Spring at JCrew. What can I say, all inspiration can’t come from art and architecture. 😉

I really enjoyed working with what I would call a more “mature” color palette on this quilt. Most of the focal fabrics are from various Carolyn Friendlander collections, with some Cotton + Steel basics and other fabrics from my stash mixed in. The background is a muted white on white (maybe even like a faint foggy color?) print from Cotton + Steel. I’m having fun lately using non solids for the backgrounds, especially when there is more background than focal print in the pattern.

The Four Square quilt is lap sized, measuring 58″ x 68″. It has a modern, minimalistic design. I selected the same fabric for all four squares in each block, but I think it would look equally nice as a completely scrappy quilt. The background could also be scrappy, maybe low volume prints? Or a dark background with light squares?

For the backing and the binding, I used a print from Rashida Coleman-Hale’s Mochi collection called Dottie’s Cousin. The backing is teal and the binding is mint.

I quilted it with diagonal lines. In one direction, they are spaced about every 1/2″. In the other direction, they are just 1/4″ on each side of the outer edges of the four square prints.

For those interested in the pattern, it is available in my shop here on my blog, as well as my Etsy shop (for EU customers). I’m suggesting it’s appropriate for advanced beginners, only because it is really important to stitch with a consistent 1/4″ seam. If you’ve made a few quilts (or anything with a sewing machine where a nice consistent seam is important), you will not have trouble making this quilt.

Four Square is already washed up and nice and crinkly, draped over the couch in my sewing room. I hope you will share photos if you make one of your own!

Four Square ~ Quilt Top and Blocks

Thank you all for the kind comments and emails from my last Four Square post. I really enjoyed finishing the blocks and assembling the quilt top, in the final quiet moments before school was let out for the summer.

For those that have asked, I did write a pattern for this quilt. The PDF version will be available as soon as the quilt is finished and photographed. Although I love the cleanness of this quilt and fabric choices, I also think it would look great with a scrappy background. I believe the block-based construction will allow for this quite easily.

The biggest challenge for this quilt has been ensuring I stitch consistent 1/4″ seams. I like to sew fast. 🙂 I forced myself to take it slow and easy.

The kids are officially out of school but I do hope to work some time in at the sewing machine each day. Keep an eye out for the finished Four Square quilt soon!
