Snowflake in October

Snowflake Quilt Progress : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Things have been very busy here over the last week. I’ve completed my Snowflake quilt top! These blocks went together quite quickly. I think I spent one morning cutting and then one day piecing. However, once I had all the blocks laid out, I decided that some of my fabric choices weren’t the best suited for the design. Basically anything too “busy” and with too much contrast really took away the focus. So I ended up remaking about 8 blocks (which is always a bit of a downer when you think you are done!).

It only took a morning to sew the blocks together to form the quilt top. We were on the go a lot the weekend, so it was nice to spend Monday relaxing and stitching away.

Today I’m planning on basting and getting started on my quilting! I can’t wait to share this pattern with you all soon. As I mentioned last week, I’ll be posting directions as a 3 week quilt along over at BERNINA’s We All Sew blog. If you want to be notified of when the posts are going up, you can always subscribe to my email notifications here.

Not Your Mama's Bee : Fresh Lemons Quilts

In quilting bee updates, my kids had off school last Thursday and Friday so we took advantage and whipped up their October blocks for Not Your Mama’s Bee. (Yes, my son keeps me on my toes. :) ) These blocks are for Katie of Swim Bike Quilt’s daughter. She requested 9 patch plus blocks using fabric with dots. The squares are cut at 5″ x 5″. We were all assigned a color so that her quilt will have a great variety. This month I decided not to tackle sewing with both kids at the same time. It was much less stressful going with a one-on-one plan. Lessons learned every month!

A New Holiday Beginning

Snowflake Quilt Progress : Fresh Lemons Quilts

This week I am pattern testing a soon-to-be quilt along that I have designed for BERNINA’s We All Sew. I thought it’d be fun to offer some peeks here along the way. I know, it’s only October! But making a holiday quilt isn’t exactly something you save for December, am I right?

I pulled some reds and aquas from my stash, and even picked up some of Cotton + Steel’s holiday line, Tinsel. I love those retro snow globes.

I have big plans for the backing, splurging on this Notes to Santa print.

The quilt design reminds me of a snowflake, so I believe that will be it’s name. I hope you will check back often to see more peeks as I create this quilt!

Straight Line Quilting into Fall

Fall Patchwork : Fresh Lemons Quilts

After a busy weekend, I spent most of yesterday stitching this little fall mini together. I’m quilting now using my BERNINA walking foot to sew straight lines that are 1/4″ apart. I’m debating going in the opposite direction as well, making a tiny grid. What do you think?

Completely unrelated to quilting…did anyone else stay up Sunday evening and watch the lunar eclipse? Or wake up in the middle of the night, depending on where you live? My daughter is studying space in school, and my son learned about the moon in class last Friday. So of course, we had to stay up. I set up my tripod and took pictures during the 2 hours we were outside.

I feel like it is always cloudy when something cool like this happens here. And it was looking like that would be the same story this time, but we lucked out with a 2 hour break in the clouds at just the right time. I am always blown away by our world. So, can I make this into quilt inspiration? I’m not sure, maybe! 😉

Bag Making with Noodlehead and Handmade Style

Tablet Case / Pattern from Handmade Style by Anna Graham : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Over the last week, I have made not one, but two bags. I must admit that I was somewhat motivated by seeing all the great handmade pouches and art bags and duffles on my trip to Wisconsin. My second motivation was receiving Handmade Style from Anna of Noodlehead. (thanks Anna! xox) Handmade Style is such a beautiful book, from the projects to the photography (by Holly of Bijou Lovely and Anna herself). The book is laid out with 60+ pages of styled project photography at the beginning and then 80+ pages of directions with hand drawn diagrams. There is a pullout sheet with pattern pieces.

There are quite a few things I plan on making in the book, and I started with the tablet case.

I picked some Cotton + Steel canvas for the outside quilting cotton for the inside.

At the last minute, I decided to leave off the tiny pocket, but if I had left it on, I would have used some of the scraps I bought from Krista at Spotted Stones.

You know it’s a good day in the sewing room when you get to use your piping foot (BERNINA foot #59) and a hammer (yep, that snap is installed GOOD.)

I love how this tablet case has darts on the bottom. There’s plenty of room in the case for my iPad, Kindle and even chargers. I plan on loading it up on my next roadtrip!

I have a few more projects on my list from Handmade Style. I really want to make the Gingham Bag. (left page, top right photo):

This makeup travel case (I even want to copy the fabric! Yep!):

I love this modern triangle quilt.

And I am seriously contemplating making this bench!
