Summer Sampler Series : Star of Virginia

Summer Sampler Series Block 1

Today is the first day of the Summer Sampler Series! We are so excited to have so many people quilting along with us. Please visit Kate’s blog at Swim, Bike Quilt for a tutorial on our first block, The Star of Virginia. Be sure to post your block and any questions in the Flickr group.

Jones Family Farm

I have been busy working on my tutorials so I don’t have anything too new to show you, so I though I’d share a few pictures from my garden. Corn is starting to grow and I am finally harvesting some green beans, sugar snap peas, carrots (not really ready but my daughter wanted to see them!), and jalapenos.

Salsa Time

I made fresh salsa last night. It was SO good. All I did was take 4 medium tomatoes, 1 large white onion, 3 cloves of garlic and 1 jalapeno (seeds removed) and sliced them all down the middles. I put them flat side down on a baking sheet and broiled them until they were soft and browning on top. Then I put them all in the food processor and blended it up! Add a bit of salt and enjoy.

Update: Here is my block!

Thanks Jodi! I bought it at Target last year when they were selling all their Liberty of London merchandise.

That salsa sounds delish! I like mine smooth like that too. Can’t wait to pop over to Kate’s and see the star. 🙂

Carrots are so much better at that size. Whenever we grow carrots we eat them all at that size – they are sweeter and have a nicer texture.

Sounds very summery – here we are more likely to want soup and good old-fashioned stews!

Sounds yummy. Never thought to roast them all before.
Did you add basil, too, or was that just for the picture?

That was just for the photo. But cilantro would be good to add! We just didn’t have any.

Really, Mrs. Fresh Lemons…. just a BIT of salt? I happen to have it on VERY good authority that you use HEAPS of salt in your fresh salsa, at least in an effort to prank an innocent roommate! (Halo and innocent eye batting here)
