Summer Sampler 2017 : Summer Star Medallion Quilt Along

Today I am very excited to announce the launch of this summer’s big quilt along, Summer Sampler 2017 : Summer Star Medallion. If you have followed Katie of Swim, Bike, Quilt, Lee of Freshly Pieced and I for any amount of time, you probably know we love samplers. We hosted the first Summer Sampler Quilt Along back in 2011 and had so much fun while learning a ton of new skills. Then we wrote Vintage Quilt Revival – another awesome project! Last summer so many of you joined us in the Summer Sampler 2016 Quilt Along. We are back at it this year, along with an awesome list of block designers.

Summer Sampler 2017 : Summer Star Medallion Quilt Along

This year’s Summer Star Medallion Quilt Along measures 70″ x 70″ and features 17 traditionally pieced and foundation paper pieced quilt blocks. Beginning Monday, May 15th, each week you will receive a pattern for a quilt block offered in two sizes : 6″ finished and 12″ finished squares. This offers you maximum creative design flexibility. You determine which blocks you make in each size and where you’d like to place them in the medallion quilt layout. Our Welcome Packet will include coloring sheets for planning your quilt colors and block layout.

After 17 weeks of block patterns, you will receive the layout instructions (including directions for borders and “filler” blocks – triangles, flying geese, sawtooth stars, and half square triangles) for finishing up your Summer Star Medallion quilt!

We have teamed up with some of the most talented quilt artists to design the blocks:

Kelly Bowser of Kelby Sews
AnneMarie Chany of Gen X Quilters
Holly DeGroot of Bijou Lovely
Lynne Goldsworthy of Lily’s Quilts
Karen Lewis of Karen Lewis Textiles
Katie Blakesley of Swim Bike Quilt
Lee Heinrich of Freshly Pieced
Faith Jones of Fresh Lemons Quilts (me!)

One of the best parts about a sampler quilt is the endless color possibilities. Maybe you want to focus on all warm or all cool colors…

Love this. So beautiful! I’ve only done fairly basic quilting. Is this quilt too difficult for a beginner? Thanks!

Hi Dana! Thank you! This quilt is suitable for an advanced beginner (someone who has a couple quilts under their belt), or someone who wants to learn new skills. The blocks are a mix of traditional piecing and foundation paper piecing. I have a lot of foundation paper pieced block tutorials for free on my blog if you want to give the technique a try. Once you do a few, a whole new world of quilting will open up to you!

Love the quilt… a great summer project. Could you please tell me the potential size of the quilt with both the 6″ squares and the 12″ squares. Thank you.

Hi Pat! The quilt will always finish at 70″ x 70″. There are 17 star blocks – 9 blocks are 12″ x 12″ and 8 blocks are 6″ x 6″. For each star, we will provide directions for both 12″ and 6″. You can customize your quilt by choosing which 9 star blocks you want to make in 12″ and which 8 star blocks you want to make in 6″. I hope this helps!

Hi, I love it, I love it, I love it!!!
If I would like to do with ombré , do you think 1/2y each color is enough ?
    Thank you

I think the ombré fabrics are gorgeous! I’m wondering , though, what they add to a completed work when they are cut into small pieces ( i.e. the”ombré” element is not really apparent) ? Is it simply a way to save $$?

Hi Gayle! Thank you! Yes, I’m using them to save money. Instead of having to buy a bunch of shades of a color, I can just buy 1/2 yard of an ombre. 🙂

    Hi

It says $19.99 dollars which I though was about £15.00 but when I click on the link it says is is £19.

Also I have done a bit of basic quilting but would love to give this a go. Is it suitable and am I assuming the Facebook page and blogs would be to help .

Hi Debbie – are you looking in the Etsy Shop for EU customers?

      https://www.etsy.com/shop/freshlypieced

Etsy takes care of the calculations for the current exchange rate, and then adds on VAT and submits the correct tax to the correct agency based on where you live. This is why all EU customers have to check out there – that would be very difficult for us to do on our own. 🙂 I’m not sure what the current exchange rate and VAT is for your area, but I trust Etsy to know and calculate correctly. We receive $19.99 from them though.

This quilt along is suitable for “advanced beginners”. The blocks are a mix of traditional piecing and foundation paper piecing. It’s a great skill builder for those looking to expand their skills in those departments. Since some of the blocks will be made in 6″, precision piecing is also a skill that will get some focus. 🙂
