Sewing Techniques for Accurate Curved Piecing by Angela Pingel

Oh boy, curved piecing. Is everyone already shaking in fear in front of your screens? Whenever I mention sewing curves, I feel like I get the same reaction as when I mention paper piecing: “Oh no no no no, there is no way I could do that! Looks so pretty though…sigh…”

Sewing Techniques for Accurate Curved Piecing by Angela Pingel

I’ll come clean. That was basically my reaction when I thought about attempting to sew curves. After some research and practice though, I’m feeling more confident. And I owe much of that to my dear friend Angela Pingel’s book A Quilter’s Mixology. You might remember me blogging about the book last year, and even making a quilt from her Petal Pusher pattern.

Sewing Techniques for Accurate Curved Piecing by Angela Pingel

Angela has just released a companion video through Interweave called Sewing Techniques for Accurate Curved Piecing: Basics and Beyond (DVD and Video Download). Today I’m here to share a bit about it with you.

Sewing Techniques for Accurate Curved Piecing by Angela Pingel

I am a visual learner – I love LOTS of pictures or learning a technique straight from the expert. I love this video. Angela walks us through examples of Modern, Traditional, and Improvisational curved piecing.

Sewing Techniques for Accurate Curved Piecing by Angela Pingel

She starts off talking about cutting your curved pieces. The only downfall of this part is I guarantee you will instantly want to go out and buy an Accuquilt Die Cutter and a new collection of Bloc Loc rulers. I know they are now on my wish list!

Sewing Techniques for Accurate Curved Piecing by Angela Pingel

Angela spends time going over how to pin the various types of curves you will encounter in quilting, and then shows the process of sewing the curves on the machine. Seeing this in action is a serious confidence booster.

She makes blocks, stitches together larger sections, and then shows the finished quilt or project.

Sewing Techniques for Accurate Curved Piecing by Angela Pingel

I love seeing how different a quilt can look based on block size and color placement. The next two pictures below are the same block:

For those of you that love Improvisational Curved Piecing but don’t know where to start, Angela walks you through the steps to create really stunning pieces as well.
