Patchwork Dreamer ~ Fresh Lemons Quilts

Hello everyone! Wow, it’s been a bit of time since I posted here. I promise I haven’t been slacking TOO much…. I’ve been having a great summer with my kids, spending time outdoors and on vacation. We went to northern Michigan for a week and the Florida panhandle for two weeks. Great memories! I’ve also been putting in a lot of design/pattern writing hours on projects related to our Summer Sampler 2017 quilt along (final quilt top assembly coming very soon!) and some other fun upcoming projects.

I realized I never shared my second teacher quilt I made last spring. This quilt was gifted to my daughter’s 4th grade teacher. My daughter helped pick the fabric (Dreamer by Carrie Bloomston, with a few fabrics from Carrie’s other lines worked in) and picked the design. She opted for a simple patchwork design and I have to say, I love it! It is so bright and fun and lets the fabric shine. I love the painted look of the fabric, as well as Carrie’s incorporation of newsprint and text.

The binding is a scrappy mix of prints. I quilted this in a free motion meandering design using my BERNINA’s BSR (BERNINA stitch regulator).

Hopefully you all have been enjoying the summer too. School starts here in 13 days! It goes fast and I will miss the laziness of summer, but I’m looking forward to getting into a routine once again.

I have never quilted. Would love to make a quilt (2) for my daughters twins (3 1/2) and this one is beautiful and seems like a good place to start. Do you share your pattern or the step by step directions all the way thru to finish. I just bought a small Singer sewing machine on Amazon and thought I would give this a try. Thanks for your reply!! I like that the squares were all the same size. I would like it to drape over a twin size bed.

Tricia – welcome to the world of quilting! A patchwork squares quilt like this is a great place to begin. I highly recommend getting a good book that will tell you all the basics of beginner quilt making. Steps you want to learn are:

      Cutting fabric
Stitching blocks together/pressing (importance of a consistent seam allowance)
      Basting your quilt
      Quilting your quilt
      Binding your quilt

I would recommend The Practical Guide to Patchwork by Elizabeth Hartman http://amzn.to/2ePwUox

An easy way to do a quilt that is made of up all squares is to buy your fabric in all equal squares. Check for “charm packs” and “layer cakes”. Good luck!

I will be ordering this today and wish me luck. Do you have suggestions of where some of the prettiest fabric materials are to be purchased and I am a bit of a bargain hunter.
        Thx for your info!
