Change

Fresh Lemons Quilts blog

This past weekend, I was busy with change ~ a big change. Changes that have been on my mind for at least a year. And if you are reading this on my blog, you probably know what I am talking about! Yesterday, I went live with a big website redesign.

Over the last year, I’ve really felt that I’ve outgrown my old WordPress template, colors, design, and layout. Yep, pretty much everything! Twelve months ago, I set up a test blog on my server and started brainstorming and testing changes. It was so overwhelming and time consuming that I sort of gave up.

Well pretty recently, I decided to revisit the idea. I felt a strong desire to create a more mature, cleaner look. I also wanted specific features, like a menu system in the top header. I had just really outgrown the capabilities of the old set up and my list of pages was just getting out of control!

I purchased a template on Etsy as my foundation and started digging into the code and making changes that aligned with my vision. (These are the times I’m very happy to have a background in computer programming!)

I’m so excited about the new look, I actually couldn’t sleep last week as I was thinking about it. I also know change is hard. Every time the Chicago Tribune or CNN redesign their websites, I am the first person to think “WHY!?!?!” Well, I hope not all of you think that when you see this new site.

** Oh, side note: the first time you load images, it will take longer than usual. It will speed up as they cache in your browser. **

All the blog content is still here. My biggest fear was somehow losing something important – or, you know, everything. The tabs that you used to see in the header are now listed in the blog menu up there. I’ve also made some (hopefully) helpful changes, like organizing my tutorials by category, listing my finished projects by year, creating a page with wholesale information, and giving my shop an easier to remember name.

Really, the best part about this new design though is it’s ability to grow with me. As I offer more tutorials, patterns, quilt alongs, and whatever else might come along over the next years. I hope you will take some time to look around. I’m sure I’ll be tweaking things over the next few days, but it’s mostly here!

It really looks great and I so understand why you did it. I recently redesigned my blog too. Now I just need to get the domain name changed and all will be set. It is exciting to feel so bright and fresh.

The great thing about WordPress is that you can change the design as often as you like without losing ANY content. 🙂

(also take backups before a full site redesign)

    Hi,
I thought I was the only computer programmer that loved to quilt. What is it that makes such different interests come together so well? Is it a right and / or left brain thing? I program logically and I blend fabrics artistically. I sew with an assembly line mind-set and I machine quilt with a creative flow. Any thoughts?

Elaine – Isn’t it so interesting? Maybe it’s like math and music – two things that you wouldn’t think go together, but they do! My dad is a computer programmer and my mom is an artist. I always think I’m a combination of them. 🙂 But yes, I also do the assembly line sewing but love being creative with fabric. I see we are a lot alike!

Light grey background might make the text easier to read. The white seems so bright. I noticed in reading comments that the grey backgrounds of comments 16 and 21 let my eyes feel rested and the text was easier on the eyes. I do LOVE your blog. Many thanks for the great content.

Hi Faith! Looks really great and beautiful! Now and then it’s good to have a ‘new haircut’ – at least I like to change. Everything looks here now easy and well organized. I wish I could do the same but i don’t have any ‘master’ with computer and I’m affraid to loose everything if I would do big changes. Have to think about that drop-down – I was suggested to do that, but just now realized what it means. It’s always enjoy to visit you and your inspiring blog! x Teje

Thank goodness! Yesterday I was convinced you had changed your website and almost commented on how much I liked it. Then I had second thoughts, thinking I was just imagining the change–funny how even when comments are anonymous, I would like to appear sane! So consider this a day-late congratulations. Really nice fresh look and easier to find things.

Congratulations on your new fresh look! Love your site…first on my list of favorites… First quilting place I go to!
I’m not a member of a traditional guild, but I am a member of an online guild, with regulars members from all over the USA, Canada and further….the first time some of us actually met it surprised me how many members were programmers, analyst or in some way connected to the IT world. Seems like programming and quilting go together!
