Sister Sampler Quilts by AnneMarie Chany

Sister Sampler Quilts by AnneMarie Chany : Fresh Lemons Quilts

It’s probably no secret that I love seeing fresh designs made with vintage blocks. When AnneMarie Chany of Gen X Quilters asked if I would like to check out her new book, Sister Sampler Quilts: 3 Modern Sampler Quilts with Paired Sister Blocks, I was thrilled to say yes!

Sister Sampler Quilts by AnneMarie Chany : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Sister Sampler Quilts is 127 pages filled with 25 blocks, each with 9″ and 12″ options. The block designs are paired with “sister” versions. In the case of the block I stitched up, Capital T, the sister block was the inverse of the color layout that I made. You can see my block below, and the sister block option in the book photo.

In addition to the 25 quilt blocks, AnneMarie provides instruction to make three different modern sampler layouts.

The Sisters’ Ten Sampler:

The Vice Versa Sampler:

The Bonfire Sampler:

The last 20 pages of the book offer tutorials on achieving accurate seam allowances, half-square triangles, quarter-square triangles, flying geese, curves, string blocks and binding.

If you love a good block reference book and are looking for creative layouts for your samplers, be sure to check this book out!

Modern Machine Quilting with Catherine Redford

Modern Machine Quilting with Catherine Redford : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Last month, I came home from a holiday trip to Michigan to some very fun mail. Quilter, teacher, and friend Catherine Redford sent me a copy of her newest Quilting Arts Workshop DVD, Modern Machine Quilting. With the kids back in school, I finally had a chance yesterday to pop it into my laptop and check it out.

Modern Machine Quilting with Catherine Redford : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Catherine and I live about 15 minutes away from each other, and I’ve had the chance to see her work in person many times. She is a very experienced and talented quilter, so I knew her expertise would show in this video. At the beginning of this 1 hour and 15 minute class, Catherine gives some information and her tips on batting, thread, needles, pressing, batting tape, feet, and stitch plates. All very important components to getting the best results with your machine quilting.

She moves on and discusses the importance of sketching out your plan and showing how to practice your designs on paper.

I love how before demonstrating each type of quilting in this video, Catherine is shown sketching out the design first.

Catherine covers a huge range of free motion quilting motifs, from stippling to swirls and loops, from filler designs (flowers, puzzle pieces, pebbles, clam shells, flames, snail trails) to borders. She even shows how to make those popular feathers and ferns.

Throughout the video, you also see finished mini quilts that incorporate a lot of the designs. And Catherine also gives great tips – my favorite is to remember to breathe while quilting! How many of us have found ourselves completely tense and holding our breath when quilting? I know I have.

Jumpin’ Jax by Jackie Kunkel

I am such a sucker for rainbows and rainbow gradients. And stars! I’m naturally drawn to quilts with any or all of these design elements.

For several quilts in the book, Jackie shares how her patterns look in alternate colorways. I find this so helpful when planning to make a quilt my own.

Splash of Color is 80 pages and contains all the templates you need to complete the projects. Jackie also provides an explanation of curved piecing.

Irish Chain Quilts by Melissa Corry

Irish Chain Quilts by Melissa Corry : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Today I’m pleased to share with you a newly released book by Melissa Corry, Irish Chain Quilts. It never really occurred to me just how many awesome ways there were to make an Irish chain quilt. When Melissa sent me her new book to check out, I was really inspired by the variety of designs inside. Irish Chain Quilts contains 15 quilt patterns – from traditional…

to appliqué.

In celebration of Melissa’s new book, several of us made a block from a pattern to be combined into one future charity quilt. My block happened to be from the cover quilt, End of the Rainbow.

These blocks are improvisational and great for scraps. I had a lot of fun just letting go, piecing without over thinking it. My background is low volume (as requested) and my focal fabrics are all shades of green. Melissa’s directions were very easy to follow, so even if you haven’t improvisationally pieced before, don’t be worried. :)
