Autumn Squares Quilt

Fall Top

Just in time to see the last leaves turn and fall from the trees, I’ve finished my fall quilt! I started to feel the pressure this week as the wind and rain came and blew so many of the beautiful red leaves away. I considered waiting for a day with blue skies to take my pictures….but hey, this is Chicago and that could be awhile!

I used fabric from my stash for the blocks of this quilt – lots of Amy Butler, with a sprinkling of Lizzy House and Heather Bailey. I originally planned on making this quilt twice as big, but life got in the way so I used the spare squares on the back for a really cool effect. The sashing is Stone by Bella Solids. I love how it has the look of linen without being linen.

I quilted it free motion style but further apart than I usually do because I wanted it to be a it looser. My husband says this is his favorite quilt so far, which surprised me because he wasn’t all about it when I was making it. It measures 62″ x 44″.

NICE! And it gives me a good idea for how to use some fabric I just ordered which didn’t have quite enough contrast for what I planned to do with it. Good tip on the Bella solids too.

    Hi Faith,
I love this quilt. Did you add the patches onto the grey fabric. If so then how did you do it?

Hi Erin – thanks for your comment! I didn’t add patches – those are the piece blocks. They are sashed in the grey fabric to complete the quilt top.

love your quilt.. making daughter her graduation quilt and this design caught her eye.. would you be willing to share dimensions of the square and how wide your sashing is?

Hi Jaylene! Thanks for your kind comments! Unfortunately I don’t have this quilt anymore, and I don’t have any details about the block sizes/sashing. I think if you want to make one, just make consistent sized blocks (say 9″, 10″, 12″, etc). Lay them out on the ground, spacing them until you like how it looks. Then measure the space between and come up with your sashing width from there.
