Art Gallery Fabrics Fat Quarter Gang ~ The Tilt a Whirl Baby Quilt

  • Faith
  • Dec 24, 2012

Merry Christmas Eve everyone! It’s the Art Gallery Fabrics Fat Quarter Gang time again. Today I’m excited to share my third project with you, the Tilt a Whirl Baby Quilt.

Tilt a Whirl Quilt Pattern by Fresh Lemons Quilts : Faith

This baby quilt features fabrics from one of Art Gallery Fabrics newest designers, Sarah Watson. The fabric line is Luxe in Bloom and it is starting to arrive in shops now. It is absolutely stunning!

Tilt a Whirl Quilt Pattern by Fresh Lemons Quilts : Faith

This quilt pattern is a simple paper pieced pattern. If you have never paper pieced before, no worries, I have a tutorial right here on my blog! The quilt goes together quickly and easily. I backed mine with minky making it perfect for keeping a special little girl warm this winter.

This is so stinking cute, Faith! Question, though — have you ever posted a tutorial about your method for using Minky as a quilt backing? I’ve tried it for baby quilts twice, two different ways (once where I used a poly batting and hand tied the quilt instead of quilting, to retain the pile and texture of the Minky, and the other time I tried quilting the pieced top just to the backing, THEN layering with Minky and machine tacking with random eyelets to hold everything together). Both times, despite prewashing my cotton fabrics, I found that the quilt tops continued to shrink when the finished quilts were washed and the Minky did not, so the backs of my quilts were like saggy elephant skin. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Happy Holidays!

Oops — typo! With my second baby quilt, I quilted the patchwork top to a think cotton BATTING with nothing under it and then added the Minky!
