An Easter Dress

Geranium Dress, pattern by Made by Rae : Fresh Lemons Quilts

An Easter dress with a few days to spare! High five! Seriously though, I really waited until the last minute this year. Which is better than last year when I just bought a dress from Coscto. This time I knew I wanted to make my daughter’s dress. I’m not really sure how much longer she is going to want to wear things I sew for her, but I can tell you she is still very excited about it when I do.

This pattern is the Geranium Dress by Made by Rae. My daughter is 7, but pretty tall for her age. I made a size 8 and it fits perfectly, with a little room to spare. I’m hoping we can get a lot of use out of it this summer!

We chose fabric from Anna Maria Horner’s Dowry line, Twill Bouquet in Black. I love, love, love it. For the bodice lining, I picked a solid from Michael Miller’s Cotton Coutures. They are so soft and smooth, I knew it’d be a perfect choice.

The pattern was easy to make. It took about 2 hours. My daughter didn’t want the ruffle flutter sleeves, the pockets, or the notched neckline, so that sped things up! I made the pleated skirt option, rather than the gathered skirt.

The buttons at the back were super easy with Bernina’s automatic buttonhole foot. Whenever I make something with buttons, I joke that I just sit back with my coffee while my machine does all the hard work for me.

I have one very happy little girl who is now ready for Easter!

The dress is beautiful and it looks great on your daughter! I used to make dresses for my daughters but they are in their twenties now. Can’t wait for some grandchildren to sew for them too.

Very Cute Dress ! How about one in a Chambray – I love Blues and the fabric would be lightweight for Summer.. This could even be a Jumper pattern for Fall… I bet she couldn’t wait to try it on and pose for the Photos…Nice Job..

I love it! I made my 7 year old daughters dress this year. A very similar Simplicity pattern. I should really make her things more often. Like you said who know how much longer it will last?

She’s as cute as the dress. Love the pleats and the purple bodice lining of Cotton Coutures. Indeed those are so soft.

Really cute! I just finished a similar dress (Caroline Party Dress) for my daughter that is about that age. They get so excited about new pretty things! I hope they still love handmade clothes in a few years 🙂

Keep sewing garments for your darling daughter. I started sewing for my 2 when they were infants. I am now preparing to make the oldests wedding gown. Since I always wait until the last minute I am usually the one begging to buy the dress. Just remember, there is a huge difference between “hand made” and “home made”.

Brilliant job! I think the dress is so delightful and your daughter is a very lucky girl. I can remember some of the dresses my mother made me as I was growing up. Wonderful to have memories. Treasure them. Julie

Beautiful job on the dress. Your daughter looks adorable. Yesterday I finished making an outfit for my daughter to wear for her 13th birthday so your requests may not stop anytime soon – they just have you create patterns just for them.

Darling dress, darling girl. With all boys here, it just Easter ties, and that’s not near as fun as dresses–not that I could whip up a dress if I needed to, but I’m jealous all the same.

Now that is a very pretty little dress. Great fabric choices. I like your daughter’s sense of style. No frills necessary. A beautiful smile is the perfect embellishment!
