A Quilt By My Mom

Quilt by Lorellen Moore, mom of Faith of Fresh Lemons Quilts

I thought it’d be fun today to share a quilt my mom just finished up. This quilt is based on a pattern in the book Once Upon A Seasonby authors Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins of Piece O’Cake Designs. My mom reworked the pattern to eliminate the center circle and sewed buttons to the centers instead, using her Bernina to make quick work of sewing them on. She also added more blocks to make the quilt a rectangle.

Other inspiration for the quilt was from Timna Tarr’s Quilt Catena as shown in Quilters Newsletter magazine, December/January 2013 issue. We saw her quilt displayed in the International Quilt Show in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 2013.

The backing is a variety of scrappy pieced prints. I spy some Sweetwater!

What an amazingly striking quilt! Thank you for sharing it! I’ll have to give buttons and this pattern a try! It might just be the perfect pattern to show off Hawaiian fabrics like Palaka!

Hi Faith, Brilliant job and like the seven other comments it’s really cool. The colours really stand out and using buttons as a embellishment is groovy! Love it, love it! Actually I’d love the pattern. Julie

Your Mom’s quilt is gorgeous and I love the idea of button in middle of flowers, I always love to change a pattern just a little to make it mine.

You’re all just wonderful, thanks for the compliments. I paper pieced this quilt, so if you want to try out this method, it’s a fun quilt for using your piles of scraps!

The rows are laid out diagonally, so I really needed to pay attention arranging the color distribution.

That is so awesome! I really love it when vintage quilts and blocks are made new again. My mom is going to be thrilled to know you saw the quilt and commented. 🙂
