Summer Sparkle Quilt Along ~ Week 1

Summer Sparkle Quilt Along with Fresh Lemons Quilts

I know, two posts in one day…crazy! :) But today marks the first week of my Summer Sparkle Quilt Along over at Bernina’s We All Sew blog. If you have ever wanted to make a 4th of July quilt…or even just love stars…this is your chance! The Summer Sparkle Quilt is a Sawtooth Star design that uses color gradients in a fun way. I used Color Block Ombre fabric from Vanessa Christenson of V & Co’s Color Me Happy line for Moda. Isn’t it great?

Each week directions will be on Bernina’s blog, but I will also post reminders over here. The Summer Sparkle Quilt Along will follow the below schedule:

June 2nd / Week 1Fabric Requirements and Cutting
June 9th / Week 2Block Assembly
June 16th / Week 3Quilt Top Assembly and Quilting

I hope you will join along!

** Someone emailed me to call to my attention that there are a few items that were left off/changed on the cutting instructions for my pattern. I’ve let Bernina know and they will correct, but hold off on cutting until I update this. (Feel free to go ahead and order your fabric though). :) ** Looks like everything is now up and correct over there!

Meet the Vintage Quilt Revival Quilts: Cosmos Baby Quilt

Today I’m sharing my fourth quilt from Vintage Quilt Revival, the Cosmos Baby Quilt. This quilt has a special place in my heart because it is the first quilt I made for the book. In fact, I made it about 2 years ago when Lee, Katie and I were writing the proposal in preparation for submitting it to Interweave. We each wanted to include not only a sample chapter but also a finished project. (Plus all the designs for the rest of the quilts in the book).

This star is actually an unnamed vintage block (more details in the book), but I started affectionately calling it “the original wonky star”. I love that it has the styling of piecing you see in the Modern Quilting movement, but it’s really quite old. This block is a great skill builder, using both paper piecing and partial seams. (I hope that doesn’t scare anyone away! It’s really not hard at all.) I quilted it with wavy lines using running stitch on my machine (Bernina stitch #4) and max out the width and set the length to 4.0. I used my walking foot while quilting.

It’s been fun to watch the book pop up on Instagram and online. I’ve shipped out several but still have more available in my shop! You can also find it now shipping from Lee, Katie, The Intrepid Thread, Fat Quarter Shop, Barnes and Noble, Walmart. STILL waiting on Amazon to ship and list theirs. Oh! And we just heard from the first person that saw the book in a real life shop, on a display stand! So that’s exciting. :)

I hope you all are having a wonderful time getting ready for the holiday season. I’ll check in again next week!

A New Picnic Quilt

Better late than never, I’ve finally finished my family’s new picnic quilt. I started this one as part of a blog hop last May. That’s May of 2012. I ended up spending a lot of the summer working on book stuff and then I wasn’t motivated to work on a picnic quilt in the winter, and well, you know how it goes. (right??) So the quilt top sat and sat until a day before our trip up to the lake for the 4th of July.

This quilt is a simple 16 patch, with the individual squares measuring 4-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ cut. The fabric is a mix of Maude Asbury’s Crabtastic line and fabrics from my stash.

The quilt ended up pretty big (for me) at 80″ x 80″. I really wanted to use fabric from my stash for the backing and binding, so I chose a black floral from Denyse Schmidt’s Chicopee for the backing and a text from Architextures for the binding. I’m hoping those will both hide the dirt a bit as we take this quilt out for some serious use at the beach and park. I quilted it loosely with wavy lines about every 2 inches.

We already tested it out while watching the fireworks over Lake Michigan on Thursday evening, and it was just perfect for the job. I can’t wait to take it along for the rest of Summer!
