Hanna Hearts ~ A Finished Quilt

Hanna Hearts Quilt : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Hanna Hearts is officially in the “finished and photographed” camp. Many of you have followed along as this quilt came together. It started when I saw the below quilt on the Hanna Andersson website.

I made 99 4-1/2″ hearts from Allison of Cluck Cluck Sew’s very timely Simple Heart Tutorial. Between the heart blocks, I cut my sashing 2-1/2″ wide, resulting in a quilt measuring 56″ x 68″.

I backed this quilt in bright pink minky (or “mooky” as my husband called it! “All quilts should have mooky on the back.” Ha!) I normally handstitch my binding to the back of the quilt, but I’ve found that in the past, the binding becomes unstitched on my minky backed quilts. (Due to lots of stretching I guess?) Any tips for me? In any case, I machine attached this binding to the back and although I’m not crazy about the look, I am confident it will stand up to abuse.

The quilting is a wavy stitch from my BERNINA 750 – you can read more about creating that stitch here. The binding is a pink and white dot, I believe from Sarah Jane Studios Children at Play line.

This quilt is a gift for someone special. I am pretty confident she will like it! The rest of this week I am working with some fabric that is no normally my “thing”…Spiderman. Maybe it will give you some ideas for those little Superhero fans in your life!

Progress and Patterns

Hanna Hearts Quilt Progress : Fresh Lemons Quilts

This has been one of those weeks where I’ve gotten so much done. A feel good week I suppose! I’ve managed to check off a doctor appointment, dentist appointment, my son’s 6th birthday, setting up patterns on Etsy for EU folks, finishing my Hanna Hearts quilt, finishing the quilt blocks for a future tutorial, playing outside with the kids in the *warm* weather, AND catching up on Nashville while I sew! Definitely going to pat myself on the back. :)

So speaking of Hanna Hearts, yesterday I spent 6 hours basting, quilting and binding. And it is D-O-N-E! I can’t wait to get some finished pictures this weekend in the glorious weather. I quilted it with wavy lines. This is the sort of moment that I just love my BERNINA 750QE and it’s visual screen.

You can see I have stitch #4 selected, and as I changed the stitch width length (duh, don’t recommend writing blog posts pre-coffee!) to 4.0 with the dial, the screen actually changed to show me how the stitch would look. I’m a visual learner, so this makes me really happy!

BERNINA We All Sew sneak peek : Fresh Lemons Quilts

I also mentioned that I finished up quilt blocks for a future tutorial. That’s a sneak peek up there. This will be online very soon at BERNINA’s We All Sew blog. I am *super* excited about this quilt. I started out with one idea for the quilt top layout and it completely transformed on my design wall. This seems to happen with my quilts more often than not. If you like scrappy and modern, I think you will really like this quilt tutorial!

And finally, for those of you that live in the EU…I know it’s been a few months of “no patterns” for you in my shop because of the new VAT laws over there. Well Etsy has announced that they are going to be handling collecting and submitting VAT for digital sales (read more here and in the featured comments on their post), so I have reopened my Etsy shop with digital patterns. If you are located in the EU, please use the Fresh Lemons Quilts Etsy shop rather than my blog pattern shop.

Ok, back to work – I’ve been busy but there still is much to do!

Summer Sparkle Quilt Along ~ Week 1

Summer Sparkle Quilt Along with Fresh Lemons Quilts

I know, two posts in one day…crazy! :) But today marks the first week of my Summer Sparkle Quilt Along over at Bernina’s We All Sew blog. If you have ever wanted to make a 4th of July quilt…or even just love stars…this is your chance! The Summer Sparkle Quilt is a Sawtooth Star design that uses color gradients in a fun way. I used Color Block Ombre fabric from Vanessa Christenson of V & Co’s Color Me Happy line for Moda. Isn’t it great?

Each week directions will be on Bernina’s blog, but I will also post reminders over here. The Summer Sparkle Quilt Along will follow the below schedule:

June 2nd / Week 1Fabric Requirements and Cutting
June 9th / Week 2Block Assembly
June 16th / Week 3Quilt Top Assembly and Quilting

I hope you will join along!

** Someone emailed me to call to my attention that there are a few items that were left off/changed on the cutting instructions for my pattern. I’ve let Bernina know and they will correct, but hold off on cutting until I update this. (Feel free to go ahead and order your fabric though). :) ** Looks like everything is now up and correct over there!
