Final Blocks and a Big Delivery

Modern Solids progress : Fresh Lemons Quilts

I hope you aren’t tired of seeing these blocks, but I have good news for you if you are. These are the final few! I am done with the paper piecing and will be completing the quilt top and quilting this week. I’m really excited to share with you the finished quilt soon ~ and the story about how I came up with the blocks and design.

Quilt Patterns : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Last week I had a big delivery on my front porch – many, many, many copies of my paper patterns. I am happy to announce I’ve been picked up by a couple of wholesale distributors (Brewer and Checker). If you are a shop owner and buy through either one of these companies, I hope you will consider carrying my pattern line. They are already listed at Brewer and hopefully will be online soon at Checker. And for you non shop owners, you can still buy patterns (paper and PDF) in my online shop here on the blog.

Bird Wings : Fresh Lemons Quilts

I spent a bit of time yesterday working with my daughter on her Halloween costume. She really likes these bird wings (found here and here). I usually don’t really make costumes – I know, I know. But this one seemed pretty straight forward and we are able to make it together. She of course picked out 2 of my most hoarded out of print fabrics (the orange Henna Garden by Sandi Henderson and the Pink Coriander by Amy Butler). Looks good in the wings though! If we don’t mess the project up too much, I’ll share the finished costume here next month. :)

Ok, back to work finishing the Modern Solids quilt!

Headed to Market

Flutter by Laura Gunn

This afternoon I head to Quilt Market in Pittsburgh. If you are attending, I hope you will stop by the F+W booth Friday at 11:45. I’ll be there signing copies of Vintage Quilt Revival! For those of you not able to go, I thought I’d post some pretty fabric here for you today. :)

Flutter by Laura Gunn

I received this fabric last week from designer Laura Gunn – her latest line Flutter for Michael Miller Fabrics. Last Winter I bought some of Laura’s bird prints from her Etsy Shop. I used them to decorate my guest room, so she knew I was going to be excited when I saw her new line. I can’t wait to use these to make some coordinating pillows!

I am planning on pairing them with some of Laura’s Painter’s Canvas that I have on hand. Most likely I’ll keep in simple with either log cabins or just squares.

I also wanted to share that I officially have two more patterns available in print.

You can find those in my pattern shop, along with PDF downloads. Any printed patterns purchased this week will ship once I’m back from market on Monday. If you are a shop and would like wholesale information, just email me!

Creativebug : Basic Line Drawing class

Finally, I started Lisa Congdon’s Creativebug class this week. I decided it would be fun to do some drawing with my 7 year old daughter. That’s hers up top with all the colors. She is loving it! I’m not sure she has ever spent so much time on one picture. And I am not someone comfortable with drawing, but Lisa really breaks it down into simple idea and shapes. I highly recommend it!

See you all next week!

Fabulously Fast Quilts and Quilting Tips Blog Tour

Fabulously Fast Quilts by Amy Smart Blog Tour

Today is my stop on the Fabulously Fast Quilts and Quilting Tips Blog Tour! Fabulously Fast Quilts is a new book written by talented quilt designer and super nice person(!) Amy Smart. You probably know her from her blog Diary of a Quilter. I was thrilled to get a look at Amy’s book and participate in her blog hop.

Fabulously Fast Quilts is a great book for beginners on up. Amy starts off with few pages on basic quilting techniques and then jumps right into 12 clever patterns. The patterns are separated into four technique categories.

I just love the punches of solid red on her Fast Four Patch quilt.

And speaking of solids, check out this show stopper. This is Amy’s Crossing Guard quilt and I am in love!

In celebration of Fabulously Fast Quilts, Amy has asked each of us on the tour to share a quilting tip. I decided to share more of a design tip, because design is the first step in making a quilt, right?

My tip revolves around pulling a perfect bundle of fabrics for your quilt. Often putting together fabrics for a quilt is the hardest part. If you are stuck, one trick is to base your bundle on a favorite print. This can be a piece of fabric or even a photo or painting.

Design Tip by Fresh Lemons Quilts

This is a print I absolutely adore from Bonnie & Camille’s April Showers line. I pulled fabrics from my stash that corresponded to all the colors in this particular piece of fabric. This works just as well in a fabric shop. Make your pile of bolts and create your own custom fat quarter set.

Fabric designers just know what looks good together, right? And even if you don’t include the original inspiration fabric on the quilt top, it would make a perfect quilt backing!
