Travel with a Bit of Sewing Thrown In

Stardust Quilt Pattern from Vintage Quilt Revival : Fresh Lemons Quilts

It’s been a pretty busy week around here. Last week I basted and started quilting my Stardust quilt. About the same time I came down with a nasty bug. During the weekend I was feeling ok one minute and sick to my stomach the next. Not fun! But I did make it to Cincinnati to celebrate my dad’s 60th birthday and am starting to feel like I’m coming out of the fog.

We came home Sunday night to watch the Superbowl (let’s not even talk about that! Big Peyton Manning fan over here…) And now I’ve been busy prepping for a trip to the Sinnissippi Quilters Guild in Rockford.

I did manage to finish my Safari Moon quilt top. This is one last peek (just before I completed it). I will be sharing the finished quilt in just a couple of weeks. I picked up some of the Animalia in Splendor fabric for the back. I just could not resist, it’s so fun!

I also have been thinking about this little quilt that I started over a year ago at Quilt Camp.

Work in Progress : Fresh Lemons Quilts

This quilt is based on my Poinsettia Mini Quilt Pattern, but it’s sort of morphed into it’s own design. Other projects have constantly taken priority over it, but I think I’m ready to push it back to the top of the list. I at least want it twice this size (to be a wall hanging), but in my dream world it would be lap sized. We shall see!

This quilt pattern is a simple paper pieced pattern. If you have never paper pieced before, no worries, I have a tutorial right here on my blog! The quilt goes together quickly and easily. I backed mine with minky making it perfect for keeping a special little girl warm this winter.

Quilt Camp

Whew! I’m back from a busy weekend away at Quilt Camp! I actually got back Sunday evening, but I still feel like I’m recovering from all the late nights and fun. We had such a good time. Thursday afternoon, Jeni drove to my house from Wisconsin so we could car pool to Michigan together. It was really nice to have someone to chat with during the drive and it seemed to go by rather quickly, rather than the 3+ hours. We stayed at the Hankerd Inn in Pleasant Lake, Michigan. It was so cute! Lots of old barns and cottages set up specifically for quilting/sewing retreats. The owner was just the sweetest and took such good care of us while we were there.

There was lots of open sewing time and also four classes. I taught my Poinsettia Mini Quilt Pattern.

There were quite a few people paper piecing for the first time – and we had a lot of success! These are only a few of the finishes.

Since I’ve already made one mini quilt from the pattern layout, I’m thinking of an alternative design with my blocks.

Heather taught Improv and everyone made really great blocks.

Jeni taught her famous drawstring bags and Brenda taught English Paper Piecing. There were bags and hexies popping up all over the place!

So much holiday sewing was accomplished – this is only part of the projects everyone finished.

These were my table mates for the weekend – my great friend Kara (we met just after college in 2000), Cristin, Angela, and Amanda.

And my fellow “camp counselors” – Heather, Brenda and Jeni.

I’m so grateful for everyone that came to hang out and sew. This was the first time for Brenda’s Quilt Camp and I know she plans many more! Hopefully many of you will get a chance to attend one of the future camp weekends.

Modern Quilts Unlimited ~ Cutting Edge Quilt Pattern

Modern Quilts Unlimited - Premier Issue, Fall 2012

You know the saying, Good Things Come to Those Who Wait? Well, the wait is over for those of you that have been looking for the pattern to my Cutting Edge quilt.

Cutting Edge Quilt

I made this quilt about 6 months ago for Free Spirit Fabrics to display at Spring Quilt Market. I also made them a pattern sheet to go with it. I was hoping that it would become available to you, in some way, but had almost given up hope.

Then a few weeks ago, I received an email from Modern Quilts Unlimited letting me know that the pattern would appear in the premier issue of the magazine! To say I was thrilled would be an understatement. For one, I knew the news would make a lot of very happy readers on the blog. I still get comments and emails about that quilt, lots of people hoping for the pattern. It also was a huge surprise and awesome honor to be in this magazine. It is FULL of great quilts – including that stunning one on the cover by none other than my Sewing Summit coteacher Kati Spencer.

A bit about the magazine. It is really beautiful. The pages are nice and thick, very high quality. It’s a quarterly magazine, this first issue is Fall 2012. You can order a subscription online (although that would start with the next issue). But if you want a copy of this one, you should be able to find it at Barnes and Noble, JoAnns, and some local quilt shops. It sounds like from their Facebook page that they expect it to be at those shops by November 1st.

And on an unrelated note…those of you that subscribe to my blog via e-mail have probably noticed something new! For many of you – it’s finally working again. :) I had outgrown my old (free) service which was preventing most of you from getting e-mail notifications of new posts. I’ve signed up for a fancy new service so you will now be receiving pretty emails for my blog posts. If you are interested in signing up so you don’t miss anything, you can either do it in the right hand column of the page (above my sponsors) or by clicking here. This is probably the best way to make sure you don’t miss any posts. I know a lot of you follow me on Facebook, but because I don’t pay Facebook to promote my posts, they only appear in about 20% of your feeds. So the e-mail subscription is nice!

And if you just want to stop by from time to time, that’s ok too. :) Be sure to visit by Thursday though, I will be posting a new block tutorial for Quilting Gallery’s Glorious Autumn Block Party. Here’s a sneak peek for you.

A little peek at something I'm working on for @mishkaottawa Quilting Gallery's Glorious Autumn...block tutorial will be up Nov 1.

Happy sewing everyone!
