Spectrum ~ A New Quilt Pattern

Spectrum Quilt : Fresh Lemons Quilts

As promised, today I’m sharing my latest quilt finish, Spectrum. Several months ago, the folks at Robert Kaufman Fabrics asked me if I was interested in creating a pattern using their Kona solids. I have been sitting on this flying geese design for a bit, waiting for the right time to make the quilt. (Does anyone else do this?? I swear I have more quilt designs than I’ll ever be able to make!) I decided the Kona’s would be perfect for it.

The Spectrum quilt features flying geese in a variety of Kona colors: Valentine, Camellia, Carnation, Pink, Coral, Kumquat, Mango, Cheddar, Corn Yellow, Canary, Buttercup, Maize, Sour Apple, Pistachio, Pear, Honey Dew, Breakers, Pool, Bahama Blue, Aqua. The background happens to be one of my favorite neutrals, Kona Snow (I just bought a bolt of it!)

In this design, I took a classic quilting element (flying geese) and updated the design through use of negative space. By staggering the columns and leaving the tops and bottoms empty (piecing in the background fabric), a traditional concept now has a very modern feel.

I quilted this using a free motion meandering design. I tried out the BSR (Bernina Stitch Regulator) on my Bernina 750QE for the first time. (I have used the BSR on my Bernina 440QE). It worked great! I put my pressure foot setting down to 0 and found that to be the easiest for smoothly moving the quilt around while stitching.

The quilt measures 54″ x 60″. The pattern is now available as a PDF Digital Download in my pattern shop. Hardcopies are on their way as well and will be listed as soon as they arrive.

Color Block Quilt

I feel like it’s been awhile since I’ve shared a finished quilt in this space. After many, many, many hours of quilting straight lines, this one is finally complete. This Color Block Quilt is based off my Rainchino Rails quilt.

I wrote this pattern back in 2011 for Fat Quarterly. For my Color Block version, I eliminated the white sashing and just increased the width of the strips by 1″. You can still buy the issue with the pattern on the Fat Quarterly website.

I debated between mixing up my fabrics or dividing them into sections, and I’m happy I ended up doing the latter. I just love color blocking! I mentioned in my last post about this quilt, I quilted straight lines using the edge of my foot as a guide. I used the dual feed on my Bernina 750QE for the entire thing – about 170 lines!

You may recall in my post on straight line quilting that I was getting “off” results from the walking foot – but I encourage you to check back at that post. It’s all working fabulously now, just tweaked my settings a bit.

The backing is a beautiful Fig Tree & Co print from their California Girl line. The binding is from Zen Chic’s Comma line. This quilt measures 60″ x 68″. It’s actually a gift, going to a very special home in the next few weeks. I can’t wait to send it off!

Shimmering Lanterns Quilt ~ Shimmer Blog Hop

Shimmer Blog Hop
Hello everyone! Welcome to my stop on Jennifer Sampou’s Shimmer blog hop. I first met Jennifer last Fall at Quilt Market – such a nice and talented woman! I was thrilled to have a chance to work with her latest line for Robert Kaufman, Shimmer.

It was really fun to work with metallic fabrics. My biggest question was how they would react to my iron and quilting. I’m happy to report that I had no problem with either! Jennifer’s designs and colors are also so sophisticated. I’m very pleased with how this quilt turned out.

This quilt is based off the Arkansas Traveler quilt block. You guys probably know I love that block by now! (If not, see herehere…AND here. lol) You can find the pattern for this block on Lee’s blog.

I made a few changes to the block. Rather than piece the center focus of the block with 4 diamonds, I used 2 triangles. I actually drew those into the paper piecing pattern and treated those as pieces 1 and 2.

I also placed the blocks on point. I love that rotating a block 45 degrees creates a completely different look. When I first designed this quilt, I was going to make the entire background white. But after I laid out the blocks, I decided to use the beautiful Shimmer prints for the border background half square triangles. I am so happy I made that change, because it really adds the wow factor that this quilt needed.
