The month of September has been dedicated to my Denyse Schmidt Modern Solids challenge for Free Spirit Fabrics. I think I’ve put a little too much pressure on myself for this one and designed no less than 5 quilts, trying to come up with the perfect project.
In the end, I decided to stick with my original idea. You may remember these blocks? I’m using the solids from the Modern Solids Fat Quarter box and Free Spirit Designer Solids in Pearl for the background. I’ve been quite busy cutting and chain piecing, but I’m thrilled with how it is coming together. I can’t wait to share the final layout with you.
I have a couple prints from Denyse Schmidt’s Ansonia collection planned for the backing.
I’m hoping to have a very productive week at the machine, and finish the rest of the blocks for the top. Wish me luck!

*Lots* of eye candy for you today! Last week I received a little bit of designer Laura Gunn‘s new line, Edges, in the mail. It arrived courtesy of Michael Miller Fabrics. I absolutely love the colors she chose for her latest collection.
As I was laying out the charms to take pictures, I was getting more and more excited to cut into them. I wanted to really feature all these great colors.
Inspired by this print from the line…
And this amazing quilt by my mom (hi mom!)…
I decided to make something with circles. I cheated a bit and used my Sizzix die cutter to cut these out.
They are 1-1/2″ in diameter. Before I cut them, I iron Heat n Bond Lite to the back of my charms, as I am going to fuse the circles onto fabric before quilting.
I spent Wednesday playing with the layout. The neutral squares are 2″ x 2″ finished. I can’t wait to share the completed mini quilt with you soon!
Edges is now available in stores. You can find it at Fat Quarter Shop.

I have been waiting to share this quilt with you for months…8 months to be exact! When editing my photos for this post last night, I noted the datestamp on my quilt photo was August 6, 2012. I can’t believe it’s been that long! I remember bringing my fabric and sewing machine on summer vacation last year, working to finish this quilt up.
Last Spring, Fons & Porter asked if I was interested in designing a quilt for a future issue, similar to the “style” of my Cutting Edge quilt which had been displayed at Spring Quilt Market. Well, that was a no brainer for me – of course I would! I was lucky enough to work again with the wonderful designer solids by Free Spirit.
Well, all these months later, I am excited to share with you that my quilt is in the now-available May/June 2013 issue of Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting. You can even buy a kit of my quilt, how cool is that!
This quilt measures 60″ x 72″ and the stars are all paper pieced for perfect accuracy. I quilted mine with a nice meandering design all over. I just love the solids and stars, the colors…I can’t wait to get it back in the mail!
Fabrics used in this quilt: Free Spirit Designer Solids in Lemon, Peach Blush, Chartreuse, Caribbean Sea, Light Jade, Jade, Sand Dune, Dogwood, Dark Coral, Flamingo, Winter White.
I thought it would be fun to share with you my original mock up for the quilt when I was in the design phase. (I do most of my design work in Photoshop).
I think the finished quilt is pretty close to the mockup.
And in weekend news, I’ll be speaking this Sunday (4/21) at 2:00 at the Chicago Modern Quilt Guild. They meet at St. Peter’s Church at 500 Hannah, Forest Park, IL. Just a little talk about my journey through quilting, my style, what inspires me, my design process. Hopefully people will find it interesting. I always enjoy enthusiastic nodders, so if you go, you know, nod along. lol I’ll also be bringing my newly finished Arkansas Traveler Quilt to share, which I haven’t posted here yet. Is that any motivation?
Visitors just have to pay $5, so I hope you will stop by!

New pillows for the couch have been on my to-do list since the beginning of Winter. I love my Autumn pillows, but I was ready to put them away until next year. When I saw Sarah Watt‘s Timber & Leaf collection for Blend Fabrics, I knew the natural designs and soft colors were perfect for my house. I mixed in Free Spirit Designer Solids in Pearl and Dogwood.
These two are my favorites!
I was inspired by Amy’s Indie Vibrations quilt. I really liked how her string blocks were paper pieced so they would line up, but still be different widths of fabric strips. I made two paper piecing templates, each are 6-1/2″ x 9-1/2″ unfinished. I used 3 of each template to form the 18″ square pillow.
You can buy the pattern for Amy’s Indie Vibrations quilt in her pattern shop.
I quilted the pillow with straight lines, about 1/2″ apart. The back is a simple envelope enclosure.
You can find Timber & Leaf at Moona Fabrics. Now to make another one for the other side of the couch!
