Modern Quilts, Home Decor, and Handcrafted Clothing

I’ve been busy…

Hand dyed following Color Your Cloth

Yep, as I predicted, dyeing fabric is very addicting. I spent the last 5 days taking over my husband’s garage parking spot and dyeing fabric, following the directions in Malka Dubrawsky’s book, Color Your Cloth. The book was *very* easy to follow and I was successful from the first piece of fabric I dyed. It is a pretty time consuming process, especially if you are working around the schedule of a 1 and 3 year old. But boy is it fun.

I’ve learned quite a bit in the last week. I probably looked like I was creating a bomb or something, with my bleach, vinegar, hot wax, dye, apron, rubber clothes, and face mask. Oh well, everyone needs at least 1 weird neighbor, right? I had a few happy color surprises, a few “ooo, not really liking how that turned out” moments. Watching the colors change from dyeing, bleaching, discharging, overdyeing is quite an adventure.

These were 2 of my favorites, and actually the first 2 I made. I had the most luck with the circles (made with a tube from some stabalizer), and the stripes (made with a paint brush). I have a feeling I could have a lot of fun with the Tjanting Tool, which is like a pen for drawing wax designs onto the cloth.

Unfortunately, I’m now out of fabric to dye and my husband was itching to get his garage space back. But I think in the next few weeks I’ll be ordering more. There’s just something very satisfying about knowing you created the fabric design for your project. I can’t wait to get sewing!
