Finished Mendocino Quartered Bento Box Quilt

I finished my first Bento Box quilt today – just baby sized at 25″ x 25″.  It turned out really cute and I think would make a great tummy time mat for a baby girl.  As I was hand stitching the binding on this afternoon, my 5 month old son was cooing at the mermaids.  I think he’s in love.

I did a strip of the Mendocino fabrics used for the back.

An up close shot of the quilting, free motion.

nice! I love Heather Ross. I really like how you pieced the binding. It really adds to the finished look.

Ok spot the beginner – did you say before that to get the crinkly look you wash and dry it after you assemble it? Is free motion where you just sort of wing it when you sew all the layers together (that’s what it sounds like), or is there a specific technique? And lastly, why did you have to hand sew the binding?

Ha Kara! ;-) Yes, after it is all done, I wash and dry it. The fabric, batting, thread all shrinks just a tad, giving it the crinkly look.

Yep! Free motion is the random meandering sewing I do to quilt all the layers together. Great description here.

I wish I was there to show you what I mean on the binding. I machine stitch it to the front, fold the fabric over to cover that and hand stitch it to the back. I found this tutorial for you.

You know, if you wanted to make a quilt, this site has a great quilt-along. (I’m actually planning on making this, except bigger, for Kyler’s full bed.)

Cute, cute, cute! I’m working on my first FMQ lap sized quilt now. It was both easier and harder than I thought! But fun!

No way! I am working on a Mendocino quilt right now. This one’s so gorgeous! I was aiming for a bento box originally, but I can’t bear to cut up my blocks.
