Reflection

I’ve mentioned once or twice before that while this blog is 99.9% a quilting/sewing blog, sometimes it’s my personal outlet too. Today is one of those days. It feels so weird to think about getting back to blogging about quilting after what happened in our country on Friday. Like many of you, I have wonderful, young children. My oldest is 6.

Lost her first tooth!

She is bright, energetic, innocent, eager to learn, loving, artistic – she is my life. Every day with her and my son is a gift from God. And every time I looked at her this weekend, I saw what was lost to so many families on Friday. It’s unbearable to imagine. I think about the teachers who lost their lives protecting the children and am humbled by their bravery, heartbroken for their loved ones.

Once again I feel like our country has lost a piece of it’s innocence. I’m preparing to send my little girl off to school today when my heart is screaming to keep her home forever. She loves school. The bus, her friends, her teachers, the learning, the specials, there is nothing she would rather do than spend all her time there. She has grown so much this year under the guidance of her awesome teacher. And I know I can’t keep her next to me forever. But I spent most of the weekend cuddling her and my son. Luckily they are young enough not to be annoyed by all the extra hugs and kisses.

Like many of you I imagine, I am left here feeling a bit helpless. I wonder what I can do to help the families and community of Newtown. I received an email over the weekend about a pillow case drive – see Flickr for details. If you know of other ways to help, please feel free to post them in the comments here.

Threadbias Kickstarter Information
Many of you have visited the website Threadbias. For those of you that haven’t, Threadbias is an online sewing community with forums, patterns, fabric libraries and more. Alex Peachey, one of the great minds behind the online community, is currently developing a web-based Quilt Design Tool where you will be able to design your quilts in a program in your web browser.

I get emails every week it seems, readers asking how they can design their quilts. This tool is really needed! Threadbias has started a Kickstarter campaign which is wrapping up in a few days, in an effort to raise money to continue development. There is a great video – you can watch it and see the tool in action. If you have a few minutes and are interested in supporting a new small business, I encourage you to watch the video and consider investing – any amount helps them reach their goal, from $5 on up.

Thanks everyone!

Martha Stewart’s American Made Awards

Heather Jones Quilt

There’s some exciting stuff going on right now in the small business and modern quilting world. Martha Stewart and Martha Stewart Living are hosting a competition, hoping to find some creative small businesses to support.

Heather Jones of Olive and Ollie (and fellow Quilt Camp teacher!) is one of the 100 finalists for the Audience Choice Awards! The winner receives $10,000 to help further their business and as you can imagine, lots of national exposure. For anyone that has tried to start a venture on their own, you know this is a huge deal and could really be life changing. I love entrepreneurs and am really excited that the Modern Quilting community is represented in this contest.

If you feel compelled to vote, I’d love for you to check out Heather’s page and give her your support. You can vote once a day through September 24th and every person counts. Thanks everyone!

Welcome Skye Reve Fabrics and Giveaway!

This morning I’m very pleased to introduce you to my newest blog sponsor, Skye Reve Fabrics. Owner Natasha Wendel is a freelance fashion designer who decided to jump full time into the fabric shop business. She loves selecting beautiful fabrics for her shop, especially shabby chic designs. Natasha has two daughters and her shop is named after their middle names. Love that!

One of new fabric lines that I’m most excited about is Out to Sea by Sarah Jane Studios. She is such a wonderful artist and just has a knack for classic little boy prints.

I’m always looking to add basics like Chevrons (small and medium) and Dots to my stash – she has lots of both!

Beautiful shabby chic fabrics, Bella Butterfly.

Natasha also offers several Fat Quarter Bundles and Half Yard Bundles.

You can keep up with Skye Reve Fabrics on the Facebook page or by signing up for the newsletter on the lower right hand side of the website homepage.

Giveaway time! Skye Reve Fabrics has generously offered a $40 shop gift certificate to one lucky reader! You have 2 chances to enter:

1. Just leave a comment!
2. “Like” Skye Reve Fabrics on Facebook and leave an additional comment saying that you did.

Thanks everyone! I will pick a winner Monday evening, Sept 10th.

++ Closing Comments to pick a winner! ++
