Quiet Stitching

Four Square Quilt Pattern : Fresh Lemons Quilts

Phew, it’s been a busy few days. I guess that’s pretty typical for the end of the school year. Lots of celebrations, travel, and soccer with some colds and allergies mixed in. I was happy to have a bit of quiet stitching time the last couple of days. Only 4 days of school left (not that I’m counting). I’m looking forward to the relaxation of summer and spending more time with my kids. They are at such fun ages (6 and 8).

Remember those tiny squares I cut a few weeks ago? Well, after I changed my mind as to how I was going to assemble the blocks – and REcut some of them – I’m finally back in business. I think I’m going to call this quilt “Four Square”. It’s inspired by a shirt I bought this year from JCrew. I really like the simple, repetitive design. It’s calming to me.

If possible, I do most of my sewing as chain piecing. That means my projects usually go from pieces…to more pieces…to slightly bigger pieces…to BAM! Finished blocks!

Peony : Fresh Lemons Quilts

I also just had to share this beautiful peony from my garden. I love peony season, it is just too short. I finally had enough blooms to not feel guilty about cutting a few for a vase inside. Something pretty to look at while I sew. Now I wonder, will I get this quilt top finished before school is out on Tuesday? We shall see!

Home Run ~ A Finished Quilt

Home Run ~ A Quilt by Fresh Lemons Quilts

I finished my latest quilt and took it on a special trip for photos! Since this quilt features Chicago Cubs fabric, in an ideal world of unlimited time I would have taken it over to Wrigley Field. But you’ll have to settle for a community ballpark. I hope that’s ok. :)

Home Run ~ A Quilt by Fresh Lemons Quilts

The Home Run quilt is a gift for a Cubs fan. (Hopefully that’s somewhat obvious!) I mentioned a few weeks ago that these quilt squares are Shoo Fly blocks. I think they look like little baseball diamonds. There are 42 blocks, each measuring 12″ x 12″ finished, resulting in a 72″ x 84″ quilt.

I pulled coordinating fabrics in blue, red, white and black for the blocks. My background is mostly white, but when I had a white feature fabric, I switched the background to gray. I fun little twist that allowed me to use those white prints.

I wanted this quilt to have a nice soft drape, so I quilted it with straight lines, horizontally and vertically, 1/4″ away from all of the seams. It gives it a nice little poof I think.

The backing is from a new Major League Baseball line by Fabric Traditions. Perfect timing, right? My daughter embroidered a label for the recipient (I’ve erased the personal details from the photo).

I think it’s a fun quilt. Hopefully a successful “man quilt” and enjoyed through the years. :) And that does complete my 4 gift quilts of Spring! Feeling much relieved and ready to move forward with my next project.

Loominous by Anna Maria Horner

This past weekend was Quilt Market up in Minneapolis. I didn’t go this time around, but I had so much fun watching everything unfold on Instagram. As usual, Anna Maria Horner’s booth made my jaw drop. And seeing her woven Loominous display made me very, very happy that I just splurged on a fat quarter bundle! Which happened to arrive last Friday!

Loominous is described as yarn dyes, and most of the fabrics feel more soft and drapey than traditional quilting cottons. Some of the designs have metallics in them – very cool. This isn’t “the usual” fabric I work with – but as always Anna Maria knows what I want before I even do. I think they would be awesome for quilts or clothing – I’m starting with a quilt.

I find it pretty much impossible to resist buying her full collections. But if I had to pick favorites, it would be these two pieces.

Loominous is just starting to pop up in shops (and I’ve noticed, selling out just as quickly!) You can currently find some at a couple of my sponsors:
